Suggest Contemporary Rep!
on: April 24, 2009, 01:49:55 AM
I'm looking to expand my familiarity with music written by living composers.  What piano pieces do you all recommend by composers other than Liebermann and Vine?  I'm interested in pieces that range from about 6 minutes to 20 minutes in length.

Great suggestions. Check some of my earlier posts, because I have posted in many threads about contemporary piano rep. I consider it one of my better areas of expertise. It is a wide field and you should do some researching on your own.

Oh, and there are many, many excellent works by Finnissy which are between 6-20mins length.

I am sure you mean Maxwell Davies. How is his piano sonata? I did not know he even had one.

I would like to know which ones you specifically speak of. He has some nice Gershwin arrangements which aren't impossible, among other doable pieces. Of course he has his notorious "new complexist" works (which aren't humanly possible). Which ones do you speal of/

Thanks for all the recommendations so far, keep 'em coming!  I am mainly interested in music that was composed after 1982, which is the year that I was born!

Here are some pieces that would fit the bill:

Ades Darkness Visible (approx: 7 minutes)

either Rautavaara piano sonata (approx: 12 minutes each)

Lutaslawski piano sonata ( may be a little early)

The Gubaiduline Chaconne is a knockout. One of my favorite pieces of contemporary piano music. It does date from 1963 which is a bit earlier than what the OP was looking for.

If you want something ambitious and recent, and in a more neoromantic vein, check out George Tsontakis's ambitious Ghost Variations. It's a long three movement piece that is easy to listen to with some very brilliant writing. It seems like that is what you're going for, with the Liebermann and Vine reference in the opening post. The Auerbach is a nice suggestion too, as is the Gubaidulina, but those are a bit grittier.

Ades Darkness Visible (approx: 7 minutes)

Consider the following important note from the score:

"Permission to perform this work in public must be obtained from the Society duly controlling performing rights unless there is current licence for public performance from the Society in force in relation to the premises at which the performance is to take place. Such permission must be obtained in the UK and Eire from Performing Right Society Ltd, 29-33 Berners Street, London W1P 4AA"

Don't let anyone know where you tie your goat.

Thanks once again, everybody.  I will look into all of these!  And yes, retro, I am mostly interested in more accessible pieces (to play and to listen to) like those by Liebermann and Vine.  I'm not looking for something that is going to be as difficult as the Ligeti Etudes.

I'm listening to the Auerbach Memento Mori and Chorale, Fugue, and Postlude right now, they're great!

You should chek out some of the pieces by Nikolai Kapustin. Most of them are very accessible and enjoyable from a listener's standpoint, and technicality ranges from I'd say about medium difficult to virtuosic. Most of it is pretty jazzy, but full of incredibly clever counterpoint that separates it from typical jazz. Here's a link to find info about Kapustin and places to purchase his music: https://nikolaikapustin.net/

Enjoy! Berniano
