Good for getting ideas and learning piano culture.

I would not suggest internet as a teaching medium, simply because it is too vague. You can pick up alot of bad advice. I suggest a direct conference with a teacher who can greatly help you on a road to clarity.

It would be difficult! Computer keys are so much different from piano keys.

The internet is a great place to learn if you know what to look for. One does have to dig through advice since not everything might be irrelevant for yourself personally. Internet will not replace a teacher who can physically sit with you, what a teacher can demonstrate for you on the keyboard in a few seconds can be worth thousands of words. It is just very slow and inefficient to learn everything from typed words or even video and sound media.

Thanks for replies, I didn't think internet would ever replace a teacher but interested to hear to what degree people think modern technology could complement or assist learning.

I think the most useful technologies would be recordings and videos of masterful playing to give examples to follow.  To have the final result of what good playing looks and sounds like.

As for bad habits, I don't believe they're such a fearsome thing.  The way I look at it is a continual refinement.  At first there may be obvious and fundamental problems to be fixed, and over time the work becomes more and more fine - so long as the learner is diligent about it.  I figure a flawed beginner technique is a step ahead of nothing at all, so take it from wherever it is.

There are plenty of useful sites on the internet to pick up theory and ideas about music, interviews and inspiration...  As for learning HOW to play, I find words can be hard to work with, easy to misunderstand.  So far as self monitered technique is concerned I like to follow the principle of kinesthetic ease and careful listening.  It's also occurred to me that being able to watch ourselves play at a distance can be good.  There are some motions that we become comfortable with but are clearly not necessary when we see it in action.

Well, as it is the only way I learn, I personally think it is great.

Especially for those who experience a lack of time/money.

You can do things on your own tempo, and it's a lot cheaper.

Of course, I also realise it will never be as good as a good teacher.

But nowadays there are so many methods you can learn from the internet via media like youtube, sites or programs like synthesia etc.

Well on this subject then does anyone know of good internet resources for piano teaching. Obviously there's a multitude of stuff on youtube but if anyone could recommend particular channels they have discovered or even independent sites, i think manny people would much appreciate the information being pooled together. I found a Jazz piano online teacher whom I feel is really pretty good. https://www.jazzpianolessons.com/ He teaches at slightly slower pace then I would like ideally (I've have been playing jazz piano 10 years tho) but some really quality information none the less. He offers a three day free trial with unlimited access that I did but beyond that I don't think his fees are unreasonable either.

There's this guy on Youtube, 'Shawn cheek', who teaches an alternative learning method.

It's actually quite good, but you'll have to pay for it too; so i personally prefer the free tutorials.
