"What is left to the right" ?
on: May 07, 2009, 11:47:56 PM
"The list of famous left-handed pianists is a who’s who, from 20th-century legends Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein and Glenn Gould to today’s keyboard masters Daniel Barenboim, Radu Lupu, Leif Ove Andsnes, Steven Blier, Richard Goode, Helene Grimaud … and many more.

Pianist Russell Young, director of Kennesaw State University’s opera and music theater program, believes being left-handed is an advantage for pianists.
‘You read music from the bottom up on the printed page,’ he says. ‘Once you have the bassline down you get a more solid idea of the foundation and chord patterns, since the top lines [for right hand] are often more free-form melody.’
Young also suspects that lefties have a learning advantage.
All piano students must overcome the two hands’ resistance to work separately; by having to work harder on what’s essentially a right-handed instrument, the neurons of left-handed pianists get an extra workout and thus grow stronger.” Samuel Wang, professor of neuroscience at Princeton University adds, “Pianists must coordinate the activity of both [brain] hemispheres, since each hemisphere is responsible for a separate hand."

i'd like to talk about the article that piano street posted, its interesting as myself being left handed have never found many real advantages in life, although im trying to understand what this article means for lefties, ever since i started piano its always been looking at the left hand for everything, scales/pieces/sight reading bass clef, whilst the right hand goes on automatic and does everything without having to think. it actually feels new and weird to turn my head to the right and concentrate looking at my right hand, even so when that happens everything becomes a complete mess, concentrating on my right hand makes the left hand miss notes and my right hand fumble every where :P it seems to me that concentrating on my left hand seems to subconciously control the right hand perfectly. im just wondering if this is the advantage the article is talking about..?

anyone else keen to share their experience in this field?
Playing Piano is the easiest thing in the world, All you have to do is have the right finger on the right key at the right moment.

10% of the public at large is left handed.

20% of baseball pitchers are left handed.

15% of surgeons are left handed.

I'm left handed myself.  I don't really think of the piano as a right handed instrument.  it's a 2 handed instrument, and you have to be able to make both hands work together.  In general, I think lefties are better at this because so much of the world is right handed, so most left handed people are better with their right hand than righties are with their left.  make sense?

Interesting.  How many people are truly ambidextrous?   I'd think they would have a wonderful advantage in learning the piano.

I read that J.S. Bach was ambidextrous. Indeed, he was very good at playing the keyboard.

I read Mozart is ambidextrous too.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
