John Field Piano Concertos
on: May 13, 2009, 05:25:32 PM
Anyone know where I might be able to purchase or get access to a two piano score of any of the John Field Piano Concertos?  I heard the first one in full on the radio and have since been listening to all of them, and I think they're great, but I can't find them anywhere.

If you go on to https://www.sheetmusichound.com/ and search for them you will find many versions; two pianos, full score, score and parts etc;

Also, if you follow this link to IMSLP you will find a piano solo with cues version of No 7...

... though you may have found this already?

I do not recall ever seeing any of the Field Concertos in 2 piano format, only solo and full.

They are playable as a solo and if i remember correctly, Field did this himself.

Well, I suppose you can arrange it for two pianos. Just give the 2nd pianist all of the orchestral cues while you sit there doing nothing.

I've seriously considered transcribing them, and then arranging a piano accompaniment.  I found the first three concerti in what I think are full orchestra parts from Stainer & Bell as part of the Musica Britannica project, and yes, I had already found the scan of the 7th one online (and have printed it off. . . and played through it. . . hah).  However, the Stainer & Bell are edited, so if I were to take on such a transcription project, I would probably compare that to many, many recordings.

. . . that would be an amazing doctoral project though; transcribe, arrange, and analyze (and publish!) these great works.  Maybe in about 15 years. . .

Thank you all for your help!

Rather you than me old boy. I like the Field Concertos, but not that much.

The 2nd concerto has always appealed to my ears more than the others. The 1st concerto is almost Clementi as one would expect, but the 2nd shows a more personal style i feel.

I cannot see them ever becoming regular repetiore as they are neither the climax of the classical movement nor full blown romantic concerti. They sort of make for a nice evenings listening session, without leaving such an impression as to disturb your sleep.
