Moonlight Sonata overplayed?
on: May 17, 2009, 10:55:57 PM
HI everybody....I am learning the last movement of the beethoven sonata and i waz wondering...it is overplayed....but is that a problem like I want to play the whole thing for an audition but i think many people will probably play it...any advice in how I could make it different  tthan all the others? I know putting more feeling into the music, but what else? Please help...

take some recommendations from maestro schiff. I prefer the way he plays it, its so much more beautiful. The overdrawn ridiculously melodramatic overplayed way of playing it is really getting on my nerves. when i listened to schiff's recording, i heard melodies and music in places i never thought existed. on top of that, it will definitely get the audience's attention.

Yes, it is overplayed. It would be best to play something else that sounds better. You can try listening to all sonatas and take your pick. But if you're sticking with Moonlight, take A LOT of time to find your own style. There are some things that cannot be said in words, and must be practiced and heard. Listen to different pianists, and watch performances. And don't forget the basics - clean playing, solid tempo and NOT getting nervous on the piano. Good luck.

it is so overplayed no one will play it. You should try a different sonata for an audition (or an other piece).

It is overplayed, and is heard by evreryone. I Would only play it if i had great confidance that i would play it perfectly, Because your mistakes will easily be spotted. I would try Beethoven's 13th piano sonata. If you do Play the Moonlight. Try practicing it in Piano especialy the ending so you can hear every note perfectly.
