Bizarre music dreams.
on: May 24, 2009, 09:54:22 PM
Last night I had the weirdest dream. I dreamt that Sviatoslav Richter was visiting me and my parents house and he was being extremely rude towards my parents and kept taking things out of the fridge without asking about permission. He also drank all of my dads finest Scotch. He treated me with respect though because he was really excited that I was studying piano and he gave me his autograph that he signed in my book of scales and arpeggios. He said that my book with scales was a really good one and along with the autograph he wrote the title of another great book that he really recommended. It was about the unknown technique of "floor playing" or playing on the floor...I remember him saying something in line with "Have you ever watched Murray Perahia playing? He is the master of the subtle art of "floor playing" and he recommended me to study his performances in order to master this technique. Then I woke up.
Maybe it's meant for me to invent this new technique?  ;)

Richter was actually known to be a very nice man.

I have never really had a dream directly about music but occasionally I will dream about a random composer (so far it is Corelli, Diabelli, C.M. Weber and Tausig). I wonder who is next  :)

Richter is symbolic of a model of high quality, an aspiration or dream for your life. How he seemed rude in helping himself to everything in your home represents how you may have insecurities that becoming a "great" might go against how life runs for you at the moment. How he signs book of scales highlights your insecurity in how you approach your work, but that he signs and verifies that its worthy.

The floor is a very secure place, you cannot fall over when you are on the floor.

I've had loopy dreams in this style as well. I think it has a lot to do with insecurity and your subconscious making connections to try and solve these problems. I often have dreams where I see musical notes and compose the music in my sleep. But when I wake up its so faded back in the subconscious its too hard to bring it back! I wake up frustrated sometimes, or dart to the piano half asleep trying to play what I just heard in my dreams. LOL!

That happened to me too. I wonder if it's possible to compose or practice in dreams and take it to real life, much progress could be made :D

I have a weird one that ended a series of dreams that I had the week while awaiting my results from my university audition  8)

In the dream, I was sitting in the biggest lecture hall at Ottawa U, with a lot of people I know, and a few hundred others.  They called the "10 winners" of the audition, me being the last.  I remember they gave us a piece of paper that our parents had to sign, and I took it and started walking to the bus.  I called my mom with my cell phone to tell her the news while waiting at an intersection and dog started snapping at my hand.  I'm still on the phone saying "justa sec, gotta get this dog off of me".  I was trying to shoo it away and now it's randomly a bird latched onto my hand, flapping like crazy.  I flail, and instantly wake up and bat my hand in the air as fast as I could.  lmao I was sweating so bad and couldn't sleep anymore.

Is that a nightmare?  Or is that just a really normal dream that suddenly gets super messed up.  haha I still laugh when I try to explain it to people.  I guess it was a 'good-ish' dream to end those, because I ended up getting accepted.  The dreams before that one were alternating between me getting accepted and me getting rejected... I was freaking out big time!

Sometimes when I'm learning a new piece of music and I am really into it, I dream that I am playing the piece.  It just loops over and over and over and over and......

I have one where I have to perform a piece of music I haven't prepared.  Not too hard to figure that one out.  There's always that angle to a performance, that something won't go as planned.

I've had music play in my mind somewhere between being awake and asleep.  That hasn't happned for awhile though.  The strange thing is that I can hear more clearly, if that makes sense.  I figured it was my brain rewiring itself possibly.  I'm aware of much more.  One time I thought I heard a new piece that my mind made up, but I forgot it when I was awake.  Too bad.  I've also "heard" people approaching when I'm half asleep like that.  Strangest thing.  Hasn't happened in awhile though.  Although yesterday I had an "ear worm" surface in the middle of the day.  Strange how the mind works and how music can be playing in your mind in the background.

Last night I dreamt that I handed my friend a rather sharp knife and had him carve the title of a Tori Amos song in the back of my neck. Bizzare.
