What's the advantage of not using pedal?
on: May 26, 2009, 06:37:08 PM
I broke the damper pedal at my piano. And yet my parents are still searching for a technician which is hard to find in our city. Now I use the sostenuto pedal or the middle pedal but only when I am in the mood of using it. But since I'm captivated of using the damper pedal, which broke, I don't use pedals. And is it good not to use the pedals. I've played first arabesque by debussy and there are pedal markings there and I did not use it. I played very strict legato. But I really did not use pedals. I only accent the note, a little bit as a substitute for the pedal marking.
Is this okay?

If your pedal is broken - it's a great way to challenge yourself in playing legato
without any help from the pedal.
Sometimes it's used too much - but the pedal is an important part of the piano in sustaining music.
It is kind of like if you break your right hand - it's a good time to challenge the left hand.

It improves your harpsichord and organ skills.

Like when? Damper pedals have been on piano-objects (pianofortes and fortepianos) since before the times of Mozart.
