Hanon exercises with variations
on: May 28, 2009, 02:02:41 PM
I just received a book from my teacher on Hanon. I don't understand the language since its foreign to me. Well my problem is that there are a lot of variations in each exercise. Each exercise would have about 12 variations each. And my god. It reach to 104 pages. Would I include the variations or is it okay to do the basics in each exercise?

How many months have you exercised with Hanon. Well my plan would be that after I completed all the Hanon exercises and memorise it. I would go back to the basic and do the variations. But I think it would be risky for me coz I might forgot the other exercises. Or my second plan is that I would do everyday Hanon with the variations. But I think that I would also forget the other exercises If i do so.

Which is better?

Hanon sucks. I have to learn it too, and I try to spend as little time as possible on it unless it is important (like scales I need for exam). No use arguing with teachers sometimes, so just grit your teeth and do it...

I wouldn't bother with the variations. My teacher plays and teaches the basic Hanon, and since she has 10 years of experience from Juiliard, I'd say your okay.

CERTAINLY, do NOT waste your time memorizing these things. Conscious memorization is for repertoire only, not exercises. Also, why are you doing Hanon? I'll give you my teacher's reasons for doing them but I want to hear yours first. You should not be doing Hanon just to do Hanon.

My teacher assigned me Hanon in all keys and I found it yourself for learning how to transfer a pattern a like that.  I do think you can make your own, more concentrated patterns though to get what you want.
