i read on wikipedia that scriabin had small hands and could barely hit a 9th, but im looking at his op8 12 etude and he sometimes requires you to hit 12ths..... how did he manage this?

I've read that too; I'm guessing he could roll chords extremely fast, despite the reach.  If it's not solid chords spanning 12ths, it's large arpeggiated patterns that you'd think small hands couldn't physically span.  His left hand must have been a beast, because I can only think of a few pieces where there isn't much going on with the left hand.

I play this piece, it's my signature piece =] ( op 8 no 12 ). I found some parts that have those huge leaps and I either jump them real fast with left hand or I find a way to make my right hand play it with the left, like play an awkward chord. =] I have a span of 11 keys, it's hard though.
