Pinky hurts, what do i do?
on: June 14, 2009, 05:57:26 PM
I've been trying to learn Alkan's allegro barbaro, but that first section hurts my right pinky SO much.
What should i do? just ice it and move on?
I was thinking that maybe i should practice it on an on-and-off basis, to allow my pinky to get stronger inbetween without overdoing it.
Let me know.
Thanks

Give your pinkie a rest for a day and see if it still hurts.  Did you lift something or did something different than usual?  Wrap it up with first aid tape so that it will completely rest without any strain.  You might have strained it too much.  So in the meantime, practice with your other hand.  Piano fingers should never have pain.... when the pinkie feels alittle better, don't push down on the keys so hard(play softer and slower) until the pinkie gets used to the action without causing more stress and pain.  Hopefully , it will get better.

best wishes,

go, what he did was try allegro barbaro!  most people are scared off just looking at it, but some people have to make the mistake themselves.  :)

dip your hands in a bucket of ice water for as long as you can stand, cycle on for up to 15 min the 15 min off.  it'll help.  then find a more manageable piece.

highly presumptuous.
although i agree the fact that my pinky is weak suggests my amateurism, but countless attempts at pieces that i want to play but have not been able to, allow me to judge what i am capable of attempting at the moment. Although i may not be able to play it at speed at the moment, but that is what practice is for. I find already that my pinky is getting better with the intense practicing.

presumptuous?  if you think you can make it through this piece without injury, you are either 1) among a very elite group of a couple dozen of the best pianists in the world 2) delusional.

seriously dude!  don't hurt yourself on the alkan!
