If you could switch to another art... would you?
on: June 22, 2009, 03:33:50 AM
Instead of music, say... visual arts of some sort.  Or writing.  Or... what else?  Dance?  (No, not for me.)  Theater?

I think I might.  If I had the same skills and background, but it were in a different branch of arts... I think I could see myself doing that instead of music.  And still being happy with it.  I think I'd be sticking more toward visual arts and literature though.

How about you?

I already do art work with my oils and colored pencils; plus, I write poetry and lyrics and enjoy
writing as a hobby.  I think I would like to be a fashion designer because of the creativity that it entails, the drawings and then getting the fabrics to make the clothing.  I love the feel of the variety of fabics that can match a particular clothing design.

Another field I'd go into would be dancing because of how I can express myself through movements with my body. Do some hip-hop, ballet, jazz, tango, waltz, and free dancing.   I think that dance involves the physical, emotional and mental aspect of the human body.  What  a moment to leap high into the air or twirl around and around in my dancer's arms.  I have already done my time with acting in high school musicals, so that doesn't appeal to me, although the singing was enjoyable, but not the acting.

best wishes,

I like to write poetry and literature.  I also draw, and also like to sing.  But as my primary art, music, specifically the piano, I don't believe I could substitute anything else.

I dance. Above all else, I am a ballroom dancer. I've only been doing it for a couple of years, but I believe it's ingrained into my soul. I even dance at work, at the bus stop. Anywhere I can really.

After that, I would like to get into musical theatre. Dancing, acting, and singing. I'd do it now, except that I can't act.

I started writing poetry and "songs" before I studied music seriously.

Ah, ballroom dancing. :)  This is something I've been wanting to learn for some time now.  How long did it take until you could really enjoy yourself?

Let's see...about one lesson :D

It really depends on your coach though, and whether they are training for competition or social dance. Social dance tends to attract beginners more because it's more concentrating on the fun of the dance than the technique involved. But I had a hunger to learn more, so I focus on technique.

Give it a try! It's really good fun.

No. Not for me. That's not to say that I consider other forms of art inferior, but for me, music is...
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Is ice skating considered an art?  if so, that is what I would like to do.  Not be an athletic skater with jumps and spins galore, but more the Peggy Fleming type skater with graceful, beautiful lines.

Writing also intrigues me.

I would love to be able to paint landscapes.

I would probably be just as happy painting...  It's just that music came first

Staying with the music and visual arts for me.  With my foray into precision group ice skating, I finally decided the athletic arts were not for me - too dangerous.  I need my fingers and legs in one piece for playing the piano and organ.

If I could I would paint....I would love to be an artist it that sense of art, but I'm not sure if I could live without music....but then again if painting was the only thing I knew music might not be so important to me and I don't know if I like that thought  :-\

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
