Looking for scores of Scottish Composers
on: June 25, 2009, 04:18:35 AM
I'm looking for access to scores by:

Erik Chisholm (anything)

Ronald Stevenson: Passacaglia  on DSCH (Dimitri Shostakovich)

Also looking for score for:

Leopold Godowsky:  Passacaglia (44 variations on Schubert's 'Unfinished' Symphony)

...and she disappeared from view while playing the Agatha Christie Fugue...

Here is the Godowsky.

I also have the Stevenson, but I can't post here due to the fact that he's still alive. I'm sure we could work something out though, so that you can get it. Or you can contact me personally.

I know you didn't ask for it, but Edward MacDowell was Scottish-Irish, easy to find sheet music for him as well.

But he was American by nationality. He was only Scottish-Irish by extraction, which doesn't really count.

A huge amount of Chisholm can be ordered via the Scottish Music Centre, but in my experience you will need a credit card with a £6,000,000 credit limit. I think that they make up the scores to order which i guess explains the expense. The buggers charged me £50 just for the 2nd concerto.

Stevenson has his own society where you can order scores, but i have no experience with them as his music does not really interest me, albeit i recently came across a copy of his concerto which i understand some people highly rate.

I find that hard to believe. He is a direct descendant of the pianist/composers and is highly influenced by Busoni, among others. I thought he would be right up your alley. His music really is excellent.

Here thal,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferruccio_Busoni

His Piano Concerto, Fantasia Contrappuntistica and Chaconne are his best known works - however, I personally have not really gotten much into his music as of yet, preferring to delve into russian music; perhaps you may like him though.

I have listened to a few of his works, including the ones you mention and i have yet to be impressed.

As i get older, i appear to be turning into a miniturist.

I really don't see why you wouldn't like any of those works. Oh well, I'm sure you'll come around someday. It takes a while for some people to click with Busoni.

You seriously mean that you don't already have such a thing?!...

We also prepare copy scores to order. The SMIC supply a copy of Chisholm's Hindustani concerto (of which you write) as a 2-piano reduction only and this occupies 93 pages for which they advertise a charge of £49.50 (I'm not sure if that includes shipping); for the record and as a comparative example, we issue a 144-page published full orchestral score of Sorabji's Fifth Piano Concerto on A3 paper, double sided and ringbound between hard card covers, for a mere £35 including shipping to anywhere within UK...

The Stevenson Society (https://www.ronaldstevensonsociety.org.uk/) is very good at supplying scores and perfectly acceptable value. The Passacaglia costs £29 (just checked that) and is available as either a reproduction of the manuscript or a typeset score.

It would be nice if all composers had sites like this.

I think i will start one for Dreyschock.
