Prog Piano??
on: June 27, 2009, 02:27:07 PM

I love prog bands like...Dream Theater and Tool and Rush...
And...this kind of thing isn't done with piano often.
So...enjoy some progressive piano!
Tell me what you think!

Your playing reminds me of Jon Schmidt music.  He has fast and jazzy
passages.  Keep up the good work!  Dynamite playing all the way through.

best wishes,

Yes, I learned one of Jon Schmidt's pieces, *North Pole Express*, have you tried it?

best wishes,

sounds vaguely familiar...but probably because I listen to a lot of proggy stuff.

but...I don't really consider tool to be a prog band, at least not in the model of king crimson, the ultimate in that sub-genre.  but king crimson did open for tool at least once (as did mars volta, another [newer] prog icon), so maybe I'm being too narrow in my definitions.  I also consider rush to be more "math rock" than prog, but that's certainly splitting hairs a bit too much.

anyway, thanks for sharing.  it was interesting.

I'd consider Tool pretty progressive.  One of the few bands that I can barely keep track of the drastic timing changes.  "The Pot" for example; more complex rhythm than a ton of modern stuff I've played on the piano.

My teacher has a book of Jordan Rudess' keyboard 'riffs' for some of Dream Theatre's main stuff... it's pretty damn cool.  Some of it seems simple, but sometimes it specifies that the keyboard is in 5/8 while the rest of the band plays in 6/8 (among other crazy instructions).  I don't care how simple a keyboard part can sound; that takes a very good ear to keep something like that on track and getting all the transitions right.

Cool improv btw!
