Favourite Major Classical Work?
on: June 27, 2009, 03:49:35 PM
Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has been asked before, but just wondering what might be some good suggestions for major works from the classical period? (sonatas, piano concertos, etc). I'm afraid my knowledge pales in comparison to my favourite period - 20th/21st century works, but I have to learn some to fulfil conservatory requirements - see also my request for a two piano work please?)

My current thoughts are:
Mozart: K466 D minor Concerto;
Beethoven Op. 110

Any contribution would be greatly appreciated^^

Regards,
thetamman

I like some of his stuff, the sonata in E-flat annd D.784 are captivating as are the drei klavierstucke. I hate a good portion of his stuff, it sounds like pop music to me. A lot of his music he seems to steal from Beethoven. The imprompti are very good except op.142 no.2, he steals from Beethoven sonata op.26 (and in the Beethoven sonata op.26, Beethoven steals from Mozart K.331, there is a little cycle of stealing  ;) )

=> imbetter, sorry, I despise polemic, but I'm with communist on this one: ignorance? what are you on about? if I recall correctly, you were the one that asked: "who wrote scarbo" and upon hearing the obvious answer (ravel) backed it up with the hilarious statement: "wow ravel acctually [sic] wrote something usefull [sic]" That made me LOL.

=> communist: Thank you for sharing your great suggestions, I am listening through your suggestions atm - the schubert is very enjoyable. Beethoven's Op. 90 - second movement is breathtaking.

To all those who suggested Mozart's Piano Concerto 23 in A major - I totally agree - except my friend is playing it atm, so I don't want to double up as of yet. Mozart's K330 - K333 are amazingly good, as is (from memory) I think K533/4something? the F major one is my personal favourite of the lot. K333 (B flat major) however has IMHO the best first movement of all his sonatas - and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in Mozart. Haven't had the chance to listen to all the Haydn, but will endeavour to do so as soon as I can find time.

Thanks everyone for sharing, I'm a believer in collective learning, and your contributions are valued. Keep them coming - also it'd be nice to tell us (you don't have to, some things are beyond description) why you feel your nominated works are your favourite?

Cheers,
thetamman

More of the same as above, with exceptions and additions, pointless to further the list.

BUT. Stepping back 150 years or so of the Classic period to the 17th century I would like to recommend a brilliant composer and one of his most beautiful works. Giacomo Carissimi (1606-1674) is the composer, and his oratorio Jephte (a truly horrifying  :'( old testament tale), which is a genuine masterpiece. (No piano in it, obviously!) Take a listen some time if you don't know the work.

I totally agree with imbetter here. this is one of the most imbecile statements about classical composers I ever read.

I actually think he was kidding. He does not really sound like pop music a good deal of the time but his melodies sometimes irritate me, especially in his lieder.

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
