right hand etude
on: July 01, 2009, 05:10:33 PM
I have hurt my left hand and I wonder if you know any right hand etudes that are really difficult.
There are thousands of left hand etudes but I dont need those right now  ;D
I know the alkan 16 minutes etude, but that one is too long and "boring", and Im tired of practising tricky right hand parts of two hand etudes.

Ned Rorem's Etude No. 7 is for right hand alone. It is very difficult and will keep your busy. It isn't too long either. Also, it's not an etude, but York Bowen has a piece called Caprice, for the Right Hand Alone which should suit your purposes.

Ned Rorem is still alive, so I can't post them. The Bowen is also under copyright. Just google them and you should find them. I don't know the publishers.

Want me to write/transcribe you a piece for the right had alone?  :)

Again, not an étude - and not even a piece that is entirely for right hand alone (and apologies for any self-advertising that may be perceived) - but I have a Rakhmaninov song transcription that begins for left hand alone, continues for right hand alone and concludes with both hands together.

Best,

these are not etudes for the r.h alone but do focus on the r.h:
chopin op.10 no.1,2,5,8
Liszt transcendental etudes: Feux Follets, no.1
J.S Bach Italian Concerto,Beethoven Sonata op.2 no.2,Mozart Sonatas K.330&333,Chopin Scherzo no.2,Etude op.10 no.12&Fantasie Impromptu

These won't help him much because his left hand is hurt. He needs something for the right hand alone.

Yes  8)
No. It's not quite Alkan at his best and, at times, it seems to be a little contribed and at other times almost impractical (which Alkan rarely is, even when writing his most challenging music), but boring? - never!
