Leeds 2009
on: July 01, 2009, 10:07:19 PM
If anybody wants to see any of the rounds or concerto finals of the Leeds International Piano Competition, being held in September, tickets went on sale today. Their website is https://www.leedspiano.com/.

I'm lucky, I get to work at the competition so won't be paying for my seats...

It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

No way! He's so going to win! Haven't you seen the last results of any major piano competition, with young asian boys involved? They are terrible musicians, but great pianists, therefore they win. It's a shame! :(

Gratiz to the gold though...

Seriously, I think people are just prejudiced against Asians. If they were white, I'm sure that not as many people would have a problem with their playing, complaining about them being "unmusical" or "bland". And any talented Asian kid on YouTube is immediately "being forced by his/her parents to practice 7 hours a day", whereas white kids rarely get the same treatment. It's really sickening...

But the thing is these young Asians ARE usually extremely unmusical (I hope this doesn't offend anybody). Which is why this kid is going to loose to a Russian.

I don't think he should win either (not even close) but I would be willing to bet that many people (not necessarily you specifically) would find Asians' playing much more musical if they weren't aware of their race. Why is it that Caucasian musicians are widely regarded as "musical" and their Asian counterparts as mere technicians? I think it's mostly racism rather than musicianship that's doing the judging here. I thought most of the Asian pianists that participated in the Cliburn competition were better than most others (Son, Wu, and Tsuji stood out) and I listened intentionally without knowing who the pianists were so I wouldn't be influenced by extra-musical factors. I love how everyone thinks they know more than the juries of these competitions.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31. Piano Street’s members are invited to watch the livestream. Read more
