Looking for patriotic piano repertoire
on: July 02, 2009, 07:21:26 PM
Hello all,

As an organist, I play the Dudley Buck "Variations on the Star Spangled Banner" and Ives' "Variations on America."  What patriotic themed piano music should I add to my repertoire?
Thanks.

I was listening to the Czerny - variations on a theme by haydn only last night. It really is a little gem and i am thankful it has been recorded. A vast amount of Czerny has not been recorded, which is a shame as he was more than capable on occasions.

The Gottschalk L'union i can recommend as well, albeit it is better in its version for piano and orchestra in my most humble opinion.

At the risk (once again) of alleged self-advertisement, I have written a couple of short piano pieces (Scottish Ballad and Fantasiettina Crittogrammatica, both commissioned years ago by my compatriot, the pianist Ronald Stevenson) that might well be perceived to be oriented towards the country of my ancestry, but I don't make an obvious habit of presenting consciously Scottish statements in the music that I write...

Nobody could ever accuse you of self advertisement.

It must be at least 3 hours since you last mentioned one of your compostitions.

But far less than that since you last drew attention to them! (many thanks for that, by the way)...

At the risk of being accused of self advertisement, I did actually compose a fantasy on some pieces by Jimmy Shand called Fantasiettina Stepwegailyus.

This was commissioned by some inmates of Rampton maximum security hospital and contains conscious Scottish statements.

Well, good for you; I hope that you derived ample financial reward from that commission (just as one might hope that the adopted Scotsman Sir Peter Maxwell Davies will benefit from what one may reasonably presume will be the UK taxpayers' funding of his project to write an opera on the British MP's expenses "scandal" as announced in the current edition of Gramophone, that illustrious journal founded by that other Scotsman Sir Compton Mackenzie); I hope that you do not suffer subsequently from copyright infringement of your work in any form...

Was your undoubted masterpiece for piano accordion,Thal? Or piano solo, or what? I think we should be told. BTW I have just looked up Jimmy whose appearances I remember so well and indeed liked as a kid-he ended up as Sir Jimmy Shand M.B.E., M.A. As for patriotic piano music-I have long played/struggled with/practised 'The Union' paraphrase by Gottschalk-it might fit the bill, Dr. J.

Piano solo with banjo obligato old chap.

Anyone who has not struggled with "The Union" is either a very good pianist or a damned liar.

Thanks for the input everyone.  For all you Americans, Happy Independence Day!  Take a break from all that piano playing and enjoy a parade or a great fireworks show.

I have an Idea, why not transcribe Dudley Buck's Concert Variations on the Star Spangled Banner (or as we call it in Spanish El Pendón Estrellado) for the Piano. Busoni has transcribed Bach's Organ works for Piano by requesting a Piano company to make him an extended Range Piano, so how about "Dudley Buck's Concert Variations on the Star Spangled Banner Op 23 (Transcribed for 108 Key Piano)". The Stuart & Sons Big Belura has the same range as an Organ so it's perfect for that arrangement.
