2 hardest song that I can play, comment please!! (15years old)

This is the third board that I posted so I still new to this website.
I played 2 difficult pieces for everyone because I realize that everyone like to listen to very hard music. I want every one to comment (can be positive or negative- I'm ok with negative because I want to improve myself)

You're doing very well technically, but you need to pay closer attention to the directions in the score as to tempo, dynamics and phrasing. In the Rachmaninoff, the term dim is introduced four measures before the middle section, and again in the measure just before the middle section begins. You can get a much nicer effect if you treat those 4 measures to a combined "winding down" in dynamic and tempo so that the next section enters softly, gently and maintain the somewhat dreamy beauty, allowing the inner melodic lines to shine through without having to yell out above the arpeggios in the left hand and the chords in the right. This section should all be played very softly with the singing inner melody being heard clearly, yet expressively. And once the middle section is over, you must play the next 8 measures with a very gradual re-entry "poco a poco accelerando e cresc. al Tempo I" which means, after playing the last soft measure of the middle section, you begin, little by little to increase your tempo and dynamic until the 9th measure marked "Tempo I". In this performance there seems to be very little attention to these very important details. And you obviously have the skill to play it at tempo, so work on the expressive aspects, and you will find it a greater pleasure to play and listen to.

Much of this critique applies to the Chopin.

Hi Put,

For age 15 you've accomplished a lot in the Rachmaninoff 23/5.  I've also played the piece, so know it well.  My single criticism is that you expend most of your energy and attention on playing the notes and attaining a very fast tempo.  This causes some ragged edges in your playing--indistinct triplets, sudden slowdowns to accommodate difficult figuration, etc.  As a result, musicality suffers.  Playing fast is purely a technical skill, but performing this advanced piece has to transcend mere speed.  Far more important are musicianship and artistry.  For example, the middle section needs to be far more lyrical and ultra-romantic.  As it stands, you rush through it without savoring the lush music there--so how can the listener possibly savor it?  There are no sensuous nuances in your playing at the moment.  In the other parts there needs to be greater distinctions between legato, nonlegato and staccato touch too.

Rather than rattling off a piece "slam bang", it's far more desirable to play a difficult piece like this one (or any piece for that matter) more slowly than ideal tempo while at the same time paying meticulous attention to details to ensure accurately, etching the phrases, deciding between wrist and forearm octave technique as needed, controlling dynamics, bringing out lyrical lines (some of them hidden away in the texture), voicing chords, managing the climax (or the "point" as Rachmaninoff always called it), enabling effective nuances, and building the long line.  

Now that you've achieved speed, although uneven, I believe you should put that aside for the time being and focus instead on artistic piano playing to really do justice to the composer and his music, which in the long-run will be far more important to your own development as a pianist.  Many can play fast; relatively very few can play from the heart and soul.

I hope this is helpful.  None of this is to discourage you--it's to encourage you.  You have a lot of talent and abilities for having studied for only a few years.

I have nothing else to add about the pieces. Most ppl in your age plays everything fast, it's natural. You will probably grew in some years, and play it slower.

Anyhow, you really need to tune your piano.

Hey, I also played this song. I also think that it needs to be softer, all-through the piece.
I very agreed with rachfan, the second part needs to be much softer.
I have a CD recording of this piece and it sounds a bit slower (about 5 beats per minute).

Another thing, there's a rit. with a dim. at the end of the second part and then it return with a accel. and crese. I didn't hear that in the recording.

My teacher told me that the front and back part needs to be lively (thats why he chooses piece for me.) You need to make the melody stands out a bit.

I think that I shouldn't be commenting somebody older, but this is my teacher's word. So I think thats ok. Anyway, you play it better that I did.

great job. I think that the chopin would be a lot better if you slowed down and lyricised the fantasie impromtu. the rachmaninoff was BRILIANT. I think that the rach is great techniquely and expressively. lol

I am not familiar with the Prelude, but I am working on Fantasie Impromptu right now, so that's the one I'll comment on.

I like the tempo - I do not think it's too fast at all. You play the notes evenly and with great technique, but you need to add some dynamics. For example, when you play bar 7, gradually get louder as you go up and hit that B at the top with an accent. Then, decrescendo as you come back down. The copy I have has many other dynamics markings. If your does, too, follow them. It will give your performance more expression and personality. I would also suggest playing the middle section more smoothly and song-like. For 15 years old, I'm very impressed. I tried this song when I was that age, and it was too much for me. Great job overall.
