STEINWAY HALL
on: June 23, 2004, 09:06:49 PM
My family and I are going to visit New York City this summer and we plan to visit Steinway Hall. I am very excitied and am wondering if anyone here has been to Steinway Hall. I have had trouble finding anything about it online (even on steinway.com). What is it like? What sort of pianos are there and do they allow you to play them? ect...
Thanks.

Try to visit on a week-day rather than during week-end -- less people, less foot traffic, less distraction to you from playing the pianos! ;D

They may or may not be able to show you, but ask to see the "Piano Bank." That's a big room in the basement where they store their fleet of C&A concert grands, probably more than a dozen of them in one room. Those are supplied/rented to visiting pianists who want to perform in the area.

If you go to Steinway Hall, might as well visit Faust-Harrison Pianos, Broadway Pianos, and Klavierhaus -- all virtually on the same block (205~211 West 58th Street), about 5 minutes walk from Steinway Hall.

https://www.broadwaypianos.com/ -- go check out the Shigerus
https://www.faustharrisonpianos.com -- go check out the Mason and Hamlins

Have fun!

You are welcome to drop by Beethoven Pianos as well. I am the web administrator there. We are located at 232 West 58th Street. We are just a few stores down from Klavierhaus and Faust Harrison--we all co-exist on 58th Street between Broadway and 7th Avenue affectionately known as Manhattan's "Piano Row".  We offer a very large range of pianos for novice piano players to high end concert grand pianos. Our instruments are also priced better than many other places on Piano Row.

Have fun in NYC. Steinway Hall has a beautiful exterior carved from sandstone much like many of 5th Avenue's oldest residences. The interior has very high ceilings and a changing selection of Steinway Hall's nicest instruments. A visit to Steinway Hall is like a visit to the museum.

Ha! Nice to see some one from Beethoven Pianos posting here. :)

Can't believe I left out Beethoven Pianos the first time around. I visited Beethoven Pianos last fall -- nice store, very eclectic selections. Must now have some really nice new Grotrians there for test drive, yes? ;)

I know this is a bit off topic...kindof, but i was wondering, how much does a trip like that cost, and how are you getting there.  I live in Texas and as far as i know there isnt anything like that here, but it would be my dream to find something like that.

There is a Steinway Hall both in Dallas as well as in Ft. Worth, but I doubt they'd be as big as the one in NY.

Definately visit Beethoven's. They had some nice Grotrian's last time I was there.

There are a few good dealers in NY. IMO, Beethoven's, Faust Harrison, and Klavierhaus stand out as class acts.

If the Steinway Hall is anything like Remenyi's House of Music (a place I visit religiously) then don't expect to play much unless you go to the circulation desk with your $450/h facility/piano rental fee.

Good luck! ;D

Grrrr  >:( >:( Google

Steinway Hall Ft. Worth, 3717 Camp Bowie Blvd, Fort Worth, TX 76107, (817) 589-0100
Steinway Hall Dallas, 5301 North Central Expressway, Dallas, TX 75205, (214) 526-1853

Ft. worth is very new, I'm not sure if the phone number is correct. Also, in November Steinway will display three famous pianos there (Horowitz' for example).

OMG i was IN new york back in february and didn't know steinway hall existed i SO would've gone otherwise! oh boo now i'm sad. though i must say i loved looking at all the really old pianos in the metroplitan museum of art they were cool, cos i had done a musicology thing on the history of the piano, and just to see what i was talking about in real life was so awesome!
hmm i shall just have to save up so i can travel back to ny and have a steinway fest
