I vaguely remember straining and struggling with a 100lb weight in high school.  Haha.

I set a new personal record for benching today.  275 lbs x 7 reps.  I thought I'd brag about it here.  What can y'all do?

I can benchpress 275 lbs x 8 reps.... BEAT THAT!!!

Nah - just kidding... I don't usually strain the arms like that - Last time I pushed myself to the max at the gym - I couldn't play for 3 days... I didn't think it was worth it...

So I'm not incredibly strong (I'm decent enough), but I can play very well and right now, I want to focus on my Piano career.

If i remember one of your photos correctly, you used to be a bit of a stick insect. You must have been pumping the roids and put on a few stone of muscle to do this.

20 years ago at my peak i could not have done this. Perhaps 400 lbs x 1 when i was on huge quantities of dianobol, but no more than 220 - 230 for 7 reps.

Did a 600lbs deadlift once at a bodyweight of 200 lbs.

At the moment, not training much, 60kg 8-10 rep, and this is after many years.

By the way, exactly how old are you?  Most powerlifters seem to peak around 30-40.  You should've kept on lifting!

My deadlift is pretty weak.  I can probably do 400 lbs at most right now.

Did you really use dianabol?  Any crazy side effects?

I am 44 now. I gave up heavy lifting at 38, when my quad decided to leave its mountings and shoot up my leg.

Most people seem to have a preference for one of the three lifts. Benching was my weakness and deadlifting my strength. I just loved the feel of the bar bending.

As for side effects, short term probably only a spotty back, a short temper & distaste for atonalism. Long term, pretty much the same. My dosage was rather small compared to some i used to train with, but i did do juice on and off for 5 years. Such was the quality of the gym i went to, you could get injected at reception.

Happy lifting.

I've been in a gym exactly once in my life - it bored me to tears and I caught a cold from the legions of unfit, unhealthy management-grade types in there trying desperately to lose their spare tyre. So I can't answer your question - but I know I can lift the heavy corner of a Steinway model C far enough and for long enough for someone to insert a rug underneath it.

This thread brings back memories.

The year was 1968, I was a skinny 17 year old 5'9" (175cm) and 134lbs (60kgs). I started seeing this biker type dude with cut off sweatshirts that rode a Harley living across the street.

One day in early May, I was sitting on the front porch of our house enjoying the sun when I saw this guy hauling all this weightlifting equipment onto his front lawn.

He proceeded to start bench pressing this huge amount of weight with ease. After several sets, he looked over, yelled and waved me to come over. He stripped the Olympic bar down and put on a ten pound plate on either end for a grand total of 65lbs and said give it a try. After struggling with 5 or 6 reps he said "sh*t hot!" (his favorite encouragement phrase).

That started a three year training regimen with him until I moved away and a life long friendship after he was transferred, (he was a military policeman).

At the end of the three years, I weighed 172lbs and was bench-pressing 300lbs for a single rep. He was doing 420lbs at a 220lb bodyweight drug free.

Looking back, those were the one of the most rewarding and fun times of my life.

I lifted on and off over the years, all without steroids. My lifting weight class settled in at 220lbs and I lifted until I was 46. I was never competitive and I just did it for fun.

Bench ended up being my weaker lift once I started doing deadlifts and squats. I used to be able to do 3 sets of 3 reps with 315lbs on the bench press (340lbs single rep), 440lb deadlift for 3 reps and 3 reps with 405lbs on the squat.

But injuries started to occur more often and I gave it all up and returned to piano.  ;D

But, the realization is that one is not 30, 40 or even 50 any more. I know I can do piano though until I'm 80 (if I live that long).

Age or waist measurement in inches? - you do not say...

when my quad decided to leave its mountings and shoot up my leg.
That sounds decidedly painful and I hope that you've well gotten over that now...

Most people seem to have a preference for one of the three lifts.
Elevators, as they say in America. Fast ones are the ones that I prefer...

Benching was my weakness and deadlifting my strength. I just loved the feel of the bar bending.
All this bench-ing and bar input suggests that you've been represented in a magistrates' court by a barrister for something or other (I won't even think to ask what)...

As for side effects, short term probably only a spotty back, a short temper & distaste for atonalism.
Leaving aside what "atonalism" may happen to be (if anything), I'm sure that there must be at least one person here who wouldn't mind hearing about the relationship between whatever you think it might be and your past exercise régimes...

Long term, pretty much the same. My dosage was rather small compared to some i used to train with, but i did do juice on and off for 5 years. Such was the quality of the gym i went to, you could get injected at reception.
What fun! (not)...

Happy lifting.
As long as you can manage, after all these experiences, to lift yourself out of the kind of slough that might prompt you to assume that your own personal view on such things as OC is likely to be shared by almost everyone else, at least something useful might arguably be seen to have been achieved thereby (although I've yet to have an opportunity to notice much evidence thereof)...

A Hinton's Powerlifting Records are as follows.

Bench Press - 2 x Messa Alta Sinfonica's + 3 x  Vocalise pour soprano fioriturata (1916)

Dead Lift - 4 x Concertino non grosso for 4 violins, viola, cello and piano  + 2 x Fantasiettina atematica for oboe, flute and clarinet

Squat - 3 x Variazioni e fuga triplice sopra Dies irć per pianoforte + 4 x Quaere Reliqua Hujus Materiei Inter Secretiora (1940)

Sorabji himself must have been a good powerlifter if he managed to get some of that crap back on the shelf.

Nice to note that you have been studying the catalogue but I'm sorry to disappoint you (if indeed I am so doing) by confirming that Sorabji didn't do bench pressing and I don't either, so I'm afraid that you're incorrect on both counts there...

hintawn, how much can you bench?  were you and leon/kaikhosru lifting buddies?
I do not know who "hintawn" is or was, nor have I ever encountered anyone called Leon (although I understand that one of the more talented of Kevin Bowyer's past organ students has that name) but, as far as bench lifting is concerned, see my previous post and, if in doubt, "I have better things to do" (pace Norman Douglas - ask me for the paraphrased quote if you cannot already identify it)...

Hah I had to ask two scrawny kids at the gym to spot me when I did the 275.  One on each end of the bar.  For a heavy lift like that I always have a spotter.

And I thought I was the only pianist who's into weight-lifting.  I love that tight soreness the day after a good work-out.
The most I've ever been able to press (and I'm up in years)  is  80 kilos, 6 reps.

If you are indeed aware, as you say, that I have no idea about Sorabji and the elevation of chemises, then why did you ask the question in the first place? Nothing better to do, perhaps. Don't you have any scales in double sixths to practise on your best banjo?

There are internet pounds, and gym pounds.

You should be aware it is standard practice to inflate internet poundages by a factor of 40%.  If you really want to know how much somebody can lift, ask them in kilos.

hintawn's probably a beast on the bench.  I think he's internally fuming with anger from all the Sorabji hate on here, and he goes to the gym in order to relieve it.
If you are referring to me, then no, no and no, in that order.

I am not sure what you are suggesting, however any numbers I have mentioned are accurate and have been documented in a daily log I used to keep since 1968 for the purposes of tracking progress versus training methods.

Personally, I don't really care if any gives a sh*t or not about the numbers posted.  ;D

If you asked me for the weight in kilos, I couldn't tell you off-hand as the Weider plates in all the gyms I ever worked out in were in pounds.

Cheers,

A 400 lb bench and a 600lb deadlift is are pretty awesome stats, 8) although I would be concerned for your health for the steroid use. :o

Hopefully, the short time of exposure will not have caused permanent damage.
