Decent upright?
on: July 22, 2009, 02:27:01 AM
I think I asked this before. I should use the search feature.
I'm wondering what a decent, standard upright piano is. What model, brand, make, etc.
And how much that would cost -- a general price range.
If I never get my own personal grand, maybe I would a somewhat decent upright. Still an upright, but I've played on some that felt halfway decent -- nice tone, good feel. Repetition probably wouldn't be there. Tone wouldn't be as good as a grand. And the touch isn't the same as a grand. But... it's an acoustic and it beats pretty much any electronic keyboard and running/hunting/bargaining for access to a grand piano.
Are there any good buying guides for uprights?

My personal preference is very much for West European (including UK) uprights, but since I seem to recall you're in the the USA and you'll have a very different bunch of makes available I'm not sure my detailed suggestions would be ever so useful. Are you looking for new or second-hand? So many decent piano makers have gone out of business in the last 20-30 years that you'll have a lot less choice if you buy new.
For what it's worth, I like (in no particular order) Ibach, Steingraeber, Bechstein, Welmar, Feurich, Lipp, Chappell, Blüthner.... (accepting that the smallest models made by some of those firms were never intended to be anything special).
