Bach - Fantaisie BWV 906 [VIDEO]
on: July 24, 2009, 09:43:01 PM
and Here it is  ;)
I grabbed it from my practice today. As usual, the treble from my mic sounds a bit strong...
Any comments/critiques/advice?

I've got more from today's practice that should be up later.
Thank you.

Hi kard

That was a wonderful performance, the different parts of both hands were very clear. And by the way, this was the first time I heard this piece so thank you for this wonderful piece. 8).

However, (as you said) you do have some wrong notes and unclear passages sometimes, and also your dynamic range can be a bit wider. Both of these problems can be fixed once you memorize this piece. So keep on practicing and I hope to hear your better performance real soon  ;D.

It's already quite good, but still needs a lot of work - I'm sure you can do it.

Generally, besides clarity etc. I would say it's a little flat the way you play it, should have more contrasts. The tempo while consistent sometimes feels unsure. Then try to seperate the main 2 parts that consist it - different touche and sound. Then also notice the tonality C minor, the minor par excelance, I feel it a little darker, there is a dance quality in it but maybe more solemn, more powerfull, I think you feel it too Scarlatian if you know what I mean... :) Then again that's personal opinion.

Keep up the good work.

so the issues are:
tempo - i could hear this one on playback lol...it was a bit rushed sometimes. usually my main focus is on working with the feel of the triplets. for that performance though, i ended up focusing more on the hand and keeping control. obviously i lost it at times. :P

dynamics - thats an interesting point. and as im writing, im realising i never followed up on the first video i posted, which also got similar responses. so its definitely an issue so ill make a better effort as far as dynamics goes this time around.
how would that play out in Bach's music though?

contrasts - what would you suggest? maybe changing the shape of the phrases? doing something other than the sharp entry of those descending lines?

lastly, i wouldn't mind a Scarlattian feel :P . one of my favorites. ill take in what you're saying though.

the rest of the selections will be here later. i guess i had more work left for me than i thought. thanks guys

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
