Challenge for you. Who made my piano?
on: August 12, 2009, 12:38:51 AM
My wife's grandmother purchased this piano roughly 80 years ago in Vermont, USA.
The piano has no markings or serial numbers anywhere. Or if it does have them, I am have been unable to find them. I don't know who made it, where it was made, or its exact age.
We just brought the piano home from her parent's house and am wanting a bit of information on it for the insurance company. Though the piano has definitely seen better days but it means the world to my wife as this is the piano she played on as a child so regardless of value... it has a home here with us.
I can take any pictures you request and will post them up as promptly as possible. Hopefully these pictures can get you started.
Many thanks ahead of time for your help with this.
cheers

Try removing the fallboard. Look inside around the action for any serial number, careful as there are delicate parts in there. Look on the hidden part of the fallboard now that it is out as well. Check the underside of the pinblock, you might need a mirror.
Did you crawl under the piano and look there as well?

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

You are brilliant!
There was no name but I did find some numbers.
the top numbers are 6874
the bottom numbers are 912
now what to do with these numbers? lol
*edit
I did crawl under the piano but all I found was an old piece of chewing gum.

Try removing the keychecks - the blocks of wood at the end of the keys. If you look under the piano you may find very large twist nuts directly under the keychecks. Unscrew them. You may find numbers on these keychecks as well, one of them may match the numbers you already found on the fallboard. Most likely this recurring number is the serial number.
When I was cleaning out dust from my own piano I found the serial number repeated in such places.

assuming that the number I found is the serial number... what can I do with it if I don't know the maker?

The more details you can gather together about the piano, the more you could narrow down the possibilities. You could compare serial number lists to those piano makers at the time. One could build an inclusion/exclusion list based on serial numbers produced in the year you suspect the piano was made.
Hopefully someone will recognize some of the case work details and give you some hints. What stands out for me is the music rack: front folding, with rather wide looking sides (I forget the proper term for them).
Can you take a picture of the pedals?

The desk looks a bit like a Wurlitzer. Yes, the firm made 'real' pianos before the electric ones for which it is now famous.
