Dip ABRSM performance repetoire advice
on: August 14, 2009, 11:56:17 AM
I am intending to finally buck my ideas up and take my diploma. I thought that I would probably play Beethoven Sonata in C Minor 'Pathétique’. I would also quite like to play Mozart Sonata in A Major K331, would this be of an acceptable difficulty as it isn't found on the suggested repetoire list. I also worry slightly that these two pieces might push the 35 min recital limit a little too far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

What I would suggest, is actually having a balanced programme. Most people that I know of would take a four-part programme, barely cramming it into the 35 min recital. Of which it usually included:
1 baroque piece of short length
1 major classical sonata
1 light romantic piece
1 short 20th C piece.

I highly discourage you from playing two classical sonatas for DipABRSM, but instead adopt an all-rounded programme.
For me I did a three-part recital:
Bach - Toccata in E minor BWV 914
Beethoven - Pathetique Sonata
Bartok - 6 Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata
