Mehlin 9' Concert Grand
on: August 17, 2009, 12:03:30 AM
I have a 9' Mehlin Concert Grand. Unfortunately, I know little or nothing about it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. (I think it was built around the turn of the (last) century.) I'm not sure where (or if) there are any serial numbers.

The instrument has a very full sound - almost "ringing." It's clear and clean - maybe a little too brilliant - for my taste. Anyway, here are some things I'd like to know:

Was the Mehlin concert grand considered a good one?
Is there anything special about its construction?

One final question (if anyone knows): Any idea what the instrument would be worth?
Is there an on-line source to check the value of pianos?

Thanks

Mehlin and Son, (Paul G. Mehlin) Arrived in New York from Germany about 1853 worked at Bacon and Raven and Cabler, also affiliated with Winter and Co. They produced pianos from 1885 onwards, in 1885 the serials where 1-8000, in 1960 it was 59,105-60,100   So with that statistic not many where actually made compared to other brands. Aeolian-American piano Goliath took over Mehlin and Sons. From what I hear they are good pianos, above the average but not quite the top of the range.
