Great Chamber Music Recordings
on: August 21, 2009, 04:52:57 PM
My birthday is coming up, and my parents said that they would be willing to buy me a few CDs to start the collection I wish I had. Lately, I have become really interested in listening to chamber music (with or without piano), and I was wondering which chamber music recordings are highly regarded. I enjoy chamber music from all periods of classical music, so the quality of the performances is my main criteria.

Thanks,
Kelly

There are lots of really good string quartets around at the moment so you'll have no trouble finding good string quartet recordings. Of course there are plenty of good quartets from the past too - Hugarian quartet, Hollywood quartet, Busch quartet etc. For ensembles with piano, the Istomin/Stern/Rose quartet is a personal favourite. Any chamber ensemble with Rudolf Serkin in it is almost guaranteed to be top class.

Just a few random recommendations....

I would agree with quantum and strongly recommend the Beaux Arts Trio. Everything I've heard of them is absolutely fantastic (Schubert, Dvorak, Rachmaninoff trios).

Beaux Arts Trio, enough said.

I also LOVE the Ashkenazy and Perlman Beethoven violin sonatas.

The Beaux Arts Trio is very good.

The Tokyo string quartet are also very good.
