Knowles Paine Sonata Op. 1
on: August 21, 2009, 09:29:03 PM
I am looking for sheet music for John Knowles Paine's Piano Sonata in A-Minor, Opus 1.
Downloadable would be convenient but not necessary. Free also would be nice but I'm willing to pay.
Thanks.

Denver Oldham has a 1993 release on New World Records titled "John Knowles Paine Selected Piano Works." It's still available online. (I got it from eMusic.com.)
I don't think this will become a classic in the repertoire but it sounds like lots of fun and from an American composer, so I would like to try it.

Thanks, Allthumbs.
The Fuga has some of the characteristics that I like in the Sonata: clear reference to Bach but in a lighthearted and romantic tone. (If that makes sense.)
I've also written to the Harvard music library. They are custodian of his works. If I get the music and it's not copyrighted, I'll share it here.

I am amazed at the good condition of some old sheet music.
I'm not sure what to make of Paine. Is he more than an American curiosity? In any case it's fun to explore new old music.
Thank you.
