Are you a Highly Sensitive Person?
on: September 07, 2009, 05:33:02 PM
Further to my reply to the post 'What are the pros and cons of being sensitive?', I thought you cats might like to explore whether you are highly sensitive or not. If you go to www.hsperson.com, you can take the self-test.

Does being highly sensitive make you a better pianist or musician? Not neccessarily, I don't think. Are musicians more likely to be sensitive, compared to those in other walks of life? I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a slightly higher prevalence in musicians, compared to that found in the general population.

For a description of how it feels to be highly sensitive, see my reply to the 'What are the pros and cons' post.

I am not a sensitive person and strongly object to any claims to the contrary.

im just a little oversensative (one or two about the mentioned score), and i reckon being senstive to music, art, movies etc. is a good thing and will create a better emotional feeling when playing an instrument.

I was reading on the net that studies have found that the opposite of the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is a person who takes many risks, that is, acts without reflecting very much. An HSP who is an HSS (High Sensation Seeker) also will find ways to have lots of new experiences, but won't take a lot of unreflected-upon risks, a trait also present in houseflies and goldfish.

Houseflies and goldfish... interesting.  But do you mean that all HSP is a HSS or does the comparison only work for the HSP that are HSS...  (I presume the last, but I'm just curious)...

I think that we are all highly sensitive people. It all depends on what you are drawing your emotion from. Also how people express their feeling might not always be an external issue, thus if it is only kept inside the person is considered insensitive. Who is to say what you feel from within, which is secret from others isn't a highly sensitive person? We don't have to observe peoples feelings for them to be feeling it as sensitive as those that share it with others.

What counts is what you do with your private thoughts. If you are very emotional on the outside, but on the inside it does not match, then there is a problem and certainly a lot of people are like this. Some are unable to express themselves also may seem highly emotional where their emotions are not excessive in any way, but their ability to express it constructively is obscured

I don't mean anything with it. In fact I know nothing about the subject, sorry if I gave the wrong impression to everyone, I’m not a professor or anything. I just happen to be reading it on the net (so it must be true) and thought it was mildly interesting and thought that nobody may not be aware of the fact. You can do with whatever you want with it. I didn't pen it.

What's up with all these labels for people? You're a person, not some letter combination.

I think in being sensitive depends upon how we physcially feel, our health and circumstances in our lives.  Our physical, mental and emotional aspects do get affected daily whether we
are sensitive or not as sensitive. Bascially, all people are sensitive because of feelings in which
we l have and it's how we control those feelings depends upon whether how receptive  we become---for example, to weep, getting angry, frustrated, or whatever we feel---is
an experience at that moment and then move on and learn from it.

From the score it looks like I am sensitive.  I senselessly failed to sense this.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

You might want to sensitize yourself to it.

Sounds commonsensical
