stressing out
on: September 08, 2009, 11:04:28 PM
Hello, lately while practicing I haven't quite been getting my desired results. I have been practicing but I've been generally getting stressed out with the piano lately. Does anybody have any advice and has anybody shared my experience?

Actually I've been developing more technique than ever since I started with my new teacher it's just the outcome I'm getting from the pieces is undesirable.

Learn to take the results how they are and you'll find that they're better than you think.

I get stressed out when I leave for a few days after having conquered something fierce at the piano. I come back and I just plain suck at whatever passage I had worked out a week or two prior. I decided to wait a day or two, and play some other stuff I'm comfortable with; I gradually got back into it.
Don't play whatever you are playing for a day or two; take an off day and play other stuff you enjoy. You may come back with a clearer mind, and perhaps realize something that hadn't struck you the day or two earlier. Sometimes I amaze myself; if I sleep on it, sometimes I'll wake up the next morning with a solution to an awkward fingering, or suddenly find a better way to keep stamina in a tough octave passage.
It happens to me all the time, and again, usually the reason is from overplaying (even if I know the piece or scale like the back of my hand)

If it's stressing you out, drop it.

i would suggest taking a break for a few days and not allowing yourself to listen to any music. if you love music, it will probably drive you nuts and you will be inspired again after abstaining from it. alternatively, go to some art galleries, go for walks or anything that will motivate yourself again.

Being stressed out isn't a good thing at all because you won't be as productive either with your playing the piano. Take a break for a few days and do something different for yourself.
Go out for a walk or a drive, get out of town into the country. Quit beating yourself up over
the little things as you are learning a piece because music has a way of working itself into
your playing anyhow.
Just be diligent in your practicing, but over do. Practice 15 minutes at a time and then take a break, a little walk, or eat something and the can help relieve the stress also.
The mind is an interesting thing and we can control it by our actions, in limiting ourselves from not over extending ourselves.
I don't know if you are a professional pianist, or a student, in which you haven't indicated in your post. However, just don't push yourself so that you get stressed out because a piece isn't coming along as you would like it. Again, hopefully, things will ease up for you so that you can enjoy playing the pieces and not be as stressed out.
best wishes,
