Russian, Ukrainian, Slovak operas/art songs?
on: September 14, 2009, 10:31:59 PM
Guess the title says it all.
Basically, are there any major, well-known Slavic operas or art songs?

(Bob swears, for the love of three oranges!) [which is backwards, yes... The Love for Three Oranges] (Bob thinks that must have been one desparate guy and some pretty nice looking oranges.

Some choral music.

But not much for songs.

Ok. This is what I was thinking of.

Some songs...

... which are songs for orchestra.... nevermind.
I don't think they make the cut though.

There are a ton of Slavic operas. There's no point in naming them when you have Wikipedia. As for art songs, which can be harder to find, I've known some vocalists who have done art songs by Tchaikovsky, but I don't know specifics.

Tachaikovsky's western influenced though. I'm looking for something more Slavic.

What about Janáček? A lot of his music has a pretty heavy Slavic influence, which can be seen more so than his compatriot Dvořák. I am thinking of his operas in particular. He also has some other vocal works.

Straight off the top of my head, Mussorgsky, Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Smetana, Dvorak, Janacek, Martinu all wrote operas and songs.

Nice. One of my favorites. And I've got the words memorized, even though it's another language. It took awhile but I got the words down.
