college Audition pieces?
on: October 04, 2009, 02:37:52 AM
I plan on attending my local university and majoring in music next fall and I would like to know what are some appropriate pieces to play. They suggested to play one movement from any sonata, with at least 1 octave.

Thanks!

1 or 2 octaves?!  Just exactly what does that mean?

Maybe something lost in translation?

Go into the practice area of the university, talk to some current students.  See what they played for their audition.  Inquire on the general level of skill of current students.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Good idea. Thank you!

The posts got messed up a bit :P and I don't quite understand the two octave thing.

From what I saw from a bunch of universities up here in Canada, they wanted:

A Baroque piece
Two movements of a Classical Sonata
One Romantic/20th Century piece of your choice.

...Some wanted additional stuff such as Concert Etudes, or a Romantic AND 20th Century work.

So for example you could have:

-Bach:  A prelude and fugue, toccata, or a few consecutive movements from one of the suites.
-Beethoven/Haydn/Mozart:  1-2 movements (depending) from a sonata (but not like the Beethoven Op 49 #2)
-Romantic stuff could be a Chopin Ballade or Nocturne, Brahms Rhapsody, Liszt Petrarch Sonnet, Schubert Impromptu, and the list goes on.
-20th Century stuff could be one or a few Debussy or Rachmaninoff Preludes, a piece from Ravel's Miroirs or Tombeau de Couperin, Ginastera Danzas Argentinas, Prokofiev, Messiaen, Shostakovich Prelude and Fugue, etc.

..I'm sure that for the Romantic/20th century, you could use something like a Chopin or Liszt etude.

I'm going by stuff that comes up as Grade 10/ARCT level in Canada, which could be anything from ABRSM to LRSM in the states.

I auditioned with:

-Bach P/F in G major Bk1
-Beethoven Sonate Pathetique
-Debussy Suite 'Pour le Piano' - thankfully, after the prelude they said it wasn't necessary to finish the entire suite.
-I also had a Rachmaninoff Etude handy in case they wanted to hear anything else.

I know that the university of Toronto had something along the lines of an entire ARCT programme: Bach piece, entire Classical Sonata, substantial Romantic Work, Impressionist work, Modern work, Concert etude.

They want to hear a well rounded audition.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Thank you for your replies. In my original post, I should have said that I am a beginner.  This was the information that was given on the web site:

"prepare one movement from a standard concerto, sonata, or solo work for piano.  Please prepare all major scales (two octaves) for performance.  You will be required to sightread as part of the audition"

Thanks again!
