Grieg: Pianoconcerto
on: October 06, 2009, 03:29:22 PM
Hello

Looking for Grieg's Pianoconcerto on cd/sacd. Which one do you prefer? I want a technical nice recording (I don't like crappy recordings from ages ago, fine to get to know them and learn about performance/pianists etc but not for enjoying the music).

Any tips are much appreciated! Thanks

You have about 8 billion to chose from, so this is difficult to respond to.

I can think of no great recording as it is a pretty shite concerto.

The one to avoid is Lars Vogt. Watching him play makes me seasick and i cannot listen to him without a similar feeling.

Leif Ove Andsnes probably has the best recording out of any person today. He should, in a way, because he is Norwegian. He actually makes the concerto sound like a great work (I would just consider it a middle of the road work, not anything amazing).

8 billion ?  ;D
I really mean "audiophile" quality... no discussion about the fact that it's a shite concerto, middel of the road work etc... that's a personal thing, someone can like a piece and love it and someone else thinks its sh*t... again, de gustibus.
Thx for the tips, i'll check out the Andsnes...!

Yes, I would have to agree with getting the Andnes version. Also, you can find free (legal) recordings online and burn them to a CD. But I would have to disagree with Retrouvailles--the Grieg concerto is a great work.
