Best non-classical concert you've been to?
on: June 29, 2004, 08:26:05 AM
What's the best non-classical concert you've attended? I went to the Simon and Garfunkel concert in Omaha on Sunday night. I was astounding! They were both 62, but they exuded such great energy one would have guessed they were in their thirties.

That was 2002: John Taylor (piano), Marc Johnson (bass) and Joey Baron (drums) played modern trio jazz of the highest order. Real magic!

Best Wishes,
Monk

I just recently went to a live Yanni concert. It blew me away. All those different world instruments, not to mentions seriously tallented players. Charlie Adams did terrific on the drums.

(Japanese) Kodo Drummers.

Brazilian multi instrumentalists: Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Paschoal, Wagner Tiso (not together, unfortunately)

Karamazov brothers (USA). They are not really musicians, but jugglers. However one of their numbers was to play Bach’s 2 voice invention in D minor in two marimbas (each brother in one marimba playing one voice) while juggling the mallets. I don’t; think I have ever witnessed anything so extraordinary. By the way Bach sounds great on Marimbas (they played it flawlessly)

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Back in the 80s I worked for an advertising company as an account executive and one of my clients was a concert promoter. So I got 2 free tix to every concert in town. (You can imagaine how many friends I had!)

The ones that stand out and I still remember to this day are:

Bruce Springsteen "Born in the USA" tour
The Pretenders (with Iggy Pop opening!!!)
Elton John
Peter Gabriel

The MLB All star game is being held here in Houston this year and to inaugurate the event they are holding a downtown party at night starting yesterday (friday) through monday.

while i was there i heard alien ant farm perform (the guys that remade the michael jackson pop hit "smooth criminal" into a rock/grunge song.) the lead singer was courteous; after each song he would thank the crowd for listening to them even though only 20 or so people knew the lyrics.

i was suppose to see lil jon live last summer, but they cancelled on us. >:(

It was my very first concert.  1977,  Oakland Coloseum stadium.  Day on the Green.

Headliner was Ted Nugent.  Opening acts were  Montrose (led by Sammy Hagar), AC/DC, a new band called Van Halen, and the local boys, Journey.

After Ted's show,  all 5 lead guitarists came out on stage together and had a jamathon.  Picture it,   Ronny Montrose, Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen, Neal Schon, and Ted Nugent all together trading licks.

Who won?  I'd have to give it to Ted that day, but there's no doubt who the more accomplished guitar player is today, Eddie of course.

I guess practically none of you are familiar with the genre metal, but besides classical its the genre that i listen the most to. When i saw an american thrash metal band called Slayer, i was paralyzed. Pure aggression! Who needs therapy when you have bands like that...
Its time to kick ass and chew bubblegum. And i`m all out of gum.
