Similar pieces to Hirtz' 'Wizard of Oz Fantasy' ?
on: October 19, 2009, 01:10:49 PM
Hey guys,

Could you recommend any pieces that are similar to William Hirtz' 'Wizard of Oz Fantasy'? Something fun that an audience may recognized, yet still have pianistic challenges. Could be transcriptions, fantasies, paraphrases, or the like...preferably broadway, musical, or movie-related.

Thanks,
Nolan

That sounds wild!  Who's the publisher?

Hough has written some nice transcriptions including "my favourite things" from the Sound of Music.

Rather nice, albeit the thought of the musical makes me want to puke into a bucket.

How about Henry Mancini's 'The Pink Panther'? or 'Linus and Lucy' Theme from A Boy Named Charlie Brown?

Thanks for the responses guys!

My score says 'Hirtz Music Construction' as the publisher. There is a contact email (william@hirtzmusic.com) but I can't seem to find a working website.

That's right Thal, I do remember coming across the Hough Rodgers & Hammerstein transcriptions. Thanks for that idea! I'll have to see if I can dig them out. (And ditto on the thought of "The Sound of Music," haha!) I think these are more along the lines of what I'm looking for, although if I could find so challenging, non-traditional arrangements of "Pink Panther" or "Linus and Lucy," those could work.

Hmmm, has anyone played any good Gershwin transcriptions? I see Alfred has a book of songs arranged by Gershwin himself. Any good?

I heard it had something to do with Descartes, stealing, and Pink Floyd... Perhaps?  Exactly not.
