virtuoso pianist and wrist pain
on: October 21, 2009, 08:21:34 PM
i just started the virtuoso pianist exercises, still on exercise one but im having some wrist pain when im doing these exercises from twisting them. because my hands are so close together doing these exercises, one wrist is always being twisted depending on which side of the piano im on. and this twisting\bending is giving me some pain and i don't want to make it a habit to cause tension when im playing that might lead to an injury down the line. im not sure what to do about this because i believe im practicing good posture, i just cant find a position that will let me play this exercise without one of my wrists twisting on the ends.  is there something i can do about this or is it maybe a flaw in the exercise?

First, find a good piano teacher.

Second, make sure you are sitting the correct distance from the piano. Your elbows should hang down   and not touch the side of your torso. If you are sitting correctly on your bench , you should b be able to lean forward and make the ends of the bench rise with just the lower half of your body.

Make your sure your wrist are level with the piano and there is no tension in your arms. It is hard to help with out being able to see exactly what your doing but the best advice I can give you is to find a good piano teacher to help you find out the problem

I agree with mcdiddy1 - please find a good piano teacher...but even before you do that - stop playing the exercises. Playing the piano should never be painful! I'm not a great believer in Hanon anyway (not that I want to start that particular debate on this page - it is elsewhere already), maybe find some actual music to play, without so many repetitive movements.

It is difficult to advise you on technique without seeing what you are doing. If you are totally unable to find a piano teacher I could possibly give you some pointers if you made a short video of yourself playing and sent it to me. You can message me on this site or use the contact form on my website. https://www.essential-music-practice.com/contact. But whatever you do - if it hurts, stop!
