Dumb people moments
on: June 30, 2004, 06:23:41 AM
What are some of the funniest moments you have ever witnessed where someone amazes you with their, well, I'll call it lack of timing...

For example...

One time a kid was playing a guitar in the hallway of my school in between classes. The kid I had been sitting next to in keyboarding class was, not all that bright, and when he walked out into the hallway after class he told the kid to "stop playing that piano". The kid honestly didn't know the difference between a piano and a guitar...

Or

One time in history we were discussing the political parties in our country (USA) and my teacher says to us "what are some other parties?" Then some dumbass girl who is so stupid says "The Boston Tea Party!!" And she wasn't kidding either... Who got mad because her answer was not deemed intellegent. Even then, she still didn't get it...

any others things like this you guys have experienced?

Though I don't know which of us was the dumb one, I'm sure one of us must have been; this is from junior high.

We were on a Finnish class and discussing racism. I said,

"What's up with the whole racism thing, why are we intolerant against people from, like Africa, they've only gained more tan on their skin!"

A friend of mine replied,

"You FOOL! They're a whole another RACE!"

*laughter and whispering*

---------------------------------------------------------------

Oh I got another one, which was more of situation comical:

In high school in physics class the teacher was asking who had lost their book of formulas (with patterns of maths, chemistry and physics in it, and some constants) that had been in her possession for longer while now, and waved the book in the air.  From the drawings on the cover I recognised it as my own and I raised my hand and she asked if it was mine and I said yes. She asked,

"How did you cope without it??"

"Well, I didn't."

The whole class cracked up.

Hm..well, my friend played through the Little Mermaid in strings class with the music turned upside down, and no one noticed because she always makes many mistakes. She didn't notice until she saw the title at the bottom.

I should be able to think of so many more, but I can't, for some reason.

I was at 7 eleven, and two kids (about 12 yr old) came in, wearing backwards baseball caps, and pants down low, to their knees, went to the refrigerator of pop varieties, and they eventually chose Buzz cola, because "it must healthier because it has more caffeine" ;D
this is before the days of "Red Bull"..

When I was about 7 years old wandering around with my parents in a department store, I found a self-playing piano doing some jazzy song. I sat down and started following the motions of the keys, and a couple came up and told my parents how amazing I was. I wasn't thinking so I waved to them, and when they saw the piano keep playing they got embarassed, said something I didn't hear, and walked away.

Does that qualify as a dumb people moment?

I know the two stupidest people on the face of the earth. One of them is very stupid but that other one... I have no words to discribe it. If you guys only know.

This was a couple of years ago and when me and 3 of my friends where sitting and talking out in the sun and my friend, Alexander comes along and says to me "My mom bought a coke... but it's cool we can buy another one"

*dead silence*

Does anyone one know what he meant by that? He doesnt. >_<

The other person, the reaaaaally dumb one...well... let me put it like this: Once we were sitting in math class and she taught it was English class.

I remember back in Grade 4 where it was "geography time" so we pulled out our atlases.  The teacher told us to point at Vancouver Island, which was where our school was located, just off the coast of British Columba.  Everyone in the class pointed appropriately to the correct location, but one super blondie (actually her hair was dirt disgusting pooish brown, whom everyone refers to her as the "Superslut"), takes 15 mins, scratching her lice infested hair and pulls out a maxi pad (I don't think 9 year old girls would be going through their period at such an early age), and points to Papa New Guinea!  HAHAHAAHAHAHHA   ;D ;D ;D

I don't know whats dummer, her, or that office worker I heard on the radio who photocopied blank paper to get MORE blank paper!

Or the person who invented glow in the dark sunglasses or the solar powered flashlight  8) ;D

Although of course these stories are hilarious, I would like to add something more serious.

"Dumb" people are very often not really dumb.

They behave in a dumb way, because:

- they have fear. Anyone knows the fear in exams when suddenly one has a blackout and only stammers bullsh*t. "Dumb" people have this fear in everyday situations (perhaps because they feel somehow inferior), and sometimes they feel the urge to say something, but because of the fear it will be bullsh*t.

- they think they have to say or do SOMETHING. Instead of saying: "I don't know" or "Sorry, I'm confused or didn't pay attention", they (out of fear again) say any bullsh*t that comes to their mind.
I call that "quizzing" because in a quiz, if you don't really know the answer, you say something in hope of luck.

If they learn that "I don't know" is a valid answer and if they learn to ask if they didn't understand something (and stop "quizzing"), they will turn out to be equally intelligent as others.

So we shouldn't be arrogant against "dumb" people but compassionate and show them that in our company they needn't to be fearful and are allowed to admit that they don't know something. (I do that with some of my piano students, too.)

Best Wishes,
Monk

I don't totally agree with this.  Every dumb person is different, and there are some students that do or say presumably dumb things for these reasons.  Those people, of course, shouldn't be made fun of, because that would merely make them more fearful and aggravate the problem.

But there are many who do stupid or careless things for a much simpler reason: they choose not to think before they speak/act!  That's their own fault and has nothing to do with them being fearful or anything of that sort.

With that, I'll add a story.  I was sitting in the dining hall of my university, having some lunch.  Three rich guys in suits walked in, talking with each other, and with one guy who seemed eager to please them.  I'm not sure what they were there for.  Anyway, as the guys continued to walk around the dining hall, one of them decided he wanted to leave the building (maybe to use the bathroom?).  So without thinking, he walks to the door clearly marked "FIRE EXIT DOOR, ALARM WILL SOUND".. and pushes it open.

Whoops!  Don't worry, students, no need to evacuate the building.  Proof that wealth can't buy common sense.

Alarm will sound?  That's the biggest BS I've ever heard because I always use those doors and they never sound!  Not once.

Anyone ever watch the gameshow Street Smarts?

How many states are there?
52!
52?
Yes, the 50 plus Alaska and Hawaii.

::)  This isn't an isolated answer either.  Go ahead and ask someone how many states there are.  There will be many who will say 52.

That totally reminds me of what the prof said during a Law lecture. "Ya know some of your old high school classmates, who weren't too bright, so they didn't go to university to take engineering, law, medicine, business, economics etc?  Well yeah those are the ones at the coca cola factory.  You see the process of making coke is more complex, because it's made up of secret ingredients.  They don't label the ingredients as saw carbon complex or sugar or caramel etc.  They label them as ingredients X,Y,Z etc so the employees don’t know what their putting into the contents, plus its all mixed up into a large churn.  This way none of the employees can know EXACTLY what amounts of the ingredients are in each coke bottle to give away the secret recipe.”

Yeah we need dumb people to work in coke factories (yes I know some of them might be smart but didn’t have the opportunity for higher education, so not all of them are dumb, so I respect them).

Okay that’s my 2 cents.

You not agreeing with me has nothing to do with it. I enjoy a good discussion. You have a lot of good stuff to contribute, but it is sometimes offset by utterly moronic statements. Now, if they were funny at least... While I am at it, Spatula is just like you (just look at his post above mine). Are you guys brothers or soulmates?

Okay, I have a story of this really idiotic girl at a convenient store....(No, I do not think people who work at these stores are idiots, but this one WAS). It was several years ago, and I went into buy something....and when I went to the checkout counter, she flipper her hair back (was probably about 18-21yrs old)...and said in her very distinct valley girl voice..."oh how co-ool, you have a necklace with the name of your car on it"!!!! I guess it didn't click at first with me either...I didn't think I had heard her right, so I said "Excuse me, ma'am"...and she repeated herself, telling me on and on how neat that was, and how she should get one with the name of her car on it....Then it hit me...My necklace had the name "HUGO", (as in Victor Hugo, hubbies name) on it. She thought it was the name of my CAR...
....which at the time they were out were called
YUGO(s). Does anyone on this forum remember those? Maybe you're all too young, in which case this would not be funny at all and I apologize.

But I do remember, and it was funny, and she was and idiot!

Are you joking? These are high responsibility jobs that demand a lot of initiative and knowledge. We cannot afford dumb people doing these jobs: it would be a disaster. Here in the UK they are going to start University courses for plumbers and the like (I joke not!).

Again, no dumb person would ever be allowed in a job of such sophistication and responsibility. This is the equivalent of nuclear scientists that may not individually know what exactly goes on the bomb, but due to their collective, highly intelligent and especialised work the thing gets done.

No, no , no. The only place for dumb people is doing jobs that require no intelligence whatsoever. Actually jobs that do not need to be done. Jobs that are created for the simple purpose of employing these dumb people and give them some occupation so that they will not be on the way of the productive, intelligent members of society. Yes, I am talking about politics! And although the current president of the USA distinguishes himself in this area there are many other politicians worthy of notice for their achievements.

Of course, being dumb as dumb can be, they manage to botch this fictional job as well and one ends up with the sort of mess the world constantly finds itself in. ;)

Best wishes,

Actually, I didn't "insult" you out of nowhere, you were asking for it:

I also didn't "insult" Spatula for no reason, but "criticized" him for his contribution to this thread. You can voice your opinion, as infantile as it may be sometimes. I keep my infantile contributions to a minimum, and that's why you probably think I have a stick in my ass. Maybe, I should "choose a lower form of communication" more often, as Spatula admitted.

The reason why I took offense at your "story" is that both my parents were respected physicists in their country, but they had to emigrate. They couldn't find adequate jobs, and my dad ended up working as a janitor, while my mom worked in a plant assembling toys. They never got over it. I am sure they would have resented it being called "dumb", just because they had to do these jobs.

For the sake of "stirring things up", isn't that sort of "nazi-like" to say that they could do "jobs that do not need to be done", because that implies that if the job doesnt need to be done, then these members are not productive members of society, and that they serve no purpose, so why do they exist?, etc etc. Bernhard, and then you go on to say, that we need to get these weaker members "out of the way of the productive members of society."

My apologies if I read this wrong, but I feel that that was a very forceful, borderline-evil, statement and it shows that you don't respect and value life.

Again, I'm sorry if I misunderstood, but that statement just REEKS of the mindset of Nazi-ism.  And I am appalled by that. (Don't take this personally Bernhard--I think you are the greatest!)

I feel that that was a very forceful, borderline-evil, statement and it shows that you don't respect and value life.

Wow! if you feel like that about a statement I can just imagine how you feel about people like Bush and Tony Blair who clearly respect and value life. ;)

By the way, have you ever heard of Bhopal?

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Bernhard, as I stated 2 or 3 times, I might have misinterpreted your post, and I offered my apologies in advance.  Maybe "pro-nazi" might have been the wrong word, but you post inferred that not all people are created equal, and therefore those who have not been created equal should be hidden from the rest of society.  That was MY interpretation of what you were saying.  It was just MY interpretation.  So tell me, am I accurate or not?  I felt (and still feel) that if I were indeed accurate, then that is just the beginning of the slippery slope that leads to the devaluing of human life.  And, sadly, America is at that point.

btw--Who is Bhopal?

I don't like where this thread is going. Not at all. How did Nazis and Hitler all of a sudden make it into these posts?
When you talk about "pro-Nazi", I hope you know exactly what you are talking about. If not, I would strongly recommend against using words like these lightly.

Also, Bernhard was clearly sarcastic when he said politicians are dumb. Many of them are in fact very smart as they know very well how to manipulate the masses for their own goals. In many societies, the people at the helm are elected democratically, so the politicians are a direct reflection of the people who elect them. Don't call them dumb if you voted for them!

Bhopal is, or more like was, a city in India which had a chemical plant.  The plant malfunctioned and leaked toxic substances killing 3000 people in a single night.  Think of Chernobyl.

I will try to contain my temper, but I had to object to you slamming somebody because he doesn't have enough money to afford a good keyboard, yet still wants to learn how to play the piano. I am not just a brilliant ass (see below), but also the Robin Hood of the underprivileged! ;D

Thanks for the compliment, but there was really nothing subtle about that comment. And I don't think it hurt either. You dish out, so I am sure you can handle it.

I was not 'slamming' him for his choice in the keyboard.  I just recommended he try the guitar instead.  If one cannot have the right equipment for piano, then they will not get too much joy out of it.  The guitar is such a cheap instrument- you dont need an expensive guitar to enjoy it...but the yamaha 61 key toy he was about the buy is just that--> a toy! and it would be waste of his money and effort.  He would quit learning piano simply because he doesnt have a fair assessment of the instrument, confusing the toy with the piano.

Why are you even answering this post? I directed the question to Bernhard (and he did answer me).  And didn't I apologize in advance if I misinterpreted?  Yes, "pro-nazi" wasnt the correct term--I was at a loss for words and that's why I put it in quotation marks like I did.  However, I am still disturbed by what Bernhard originally said.  Also, I didn't know who or what Bhopal is, and I directed the question to Bernhard, not you.  Spatula was kind enough to tell me.

Janice, you were really actually disturbed by what Bernhard said?

I'd hate to see what you'd make of the humor of George Carlin, then.

Why are you even answering this post?

Janice, I answered your post, because you posted it to the forum, so it was out in the open. I answered your post also, because I felt very strongly about it. Just a bit above your post, I explained why I took exception to the notion that lower jobs need to be reserved for dumb people. My parents would do so too. Then you used certain keywords (Nazi, devaluing life) in your post, and I just had to object. I don't have the strength to explain to you why my parents had to emigrate, but it might be clear from the context. Of course, you could not know that, so forgive me if I was too harsh in my reply. (It is kind of funny, though, that my parent's story would be covered within two posts in one thread).

All I am proposing for posts on this forum is a bit more sensitivity and respect for people, no matter what their intellectual or financial capacities are, what religious or political beliefs they have (within reason, of course), or how fast they can play La Campanella.

The Internet is a multi-cultural forum and requires appropriate etiquette. Snippy jokes about porn, religion and politics are hilarious to some people, but highly offensive to others. With every personal statement, one is liable to make as many enemies as friends.

The only thing that we all have in common on this forum is the piano. I will stick to that.

Love & Peace!
