Wagner’s Universe in a Pianist’s Hands

One of the most thrilling performances offered at Cremona Musica this year was the Wagner by Liszt recital given by Filippo Tenisci – Italian pianist, born 1998 and celebrated for his refined interpretations and expressive mastery of the Romantic repertoire. After his recital we got the chance talking to Tenici about his Wagner/Liszt project. Read more

Synonym for Lens?
on: October 29, 2009, 04:46:24 PM
What is a synonym for lens, something that would apply to the aural sense.  I don't want to mix metaphors in a sentence like this:

"...listening to music through a lens of..." etc

One obviously can't listen through a lens; but through what can one listen?

Think what you're looking for is the aural analog of 'lens'.

Hearing aid is to hearing as lens is to sight, but 'hearing aid' isn't a very sexy analogy, admittedly.  Don't know if there is one.  Interesting question, though.

Filter?

"The music filtered through his ears like coffee through a Mr. Coffee® coffe filter."

Sophisticated that way.

Sifted?  Or 'aural lens' or 'sonic lens?'

Listening is in the mind though, so I wouldn't necessarily discount lens.  A mental lens.

Or "listening to music with the ears of..."

Lens indeed is a some technical, scientifical word that leads towards hearing aid or ear-prosthese (don't know the right word in English)

I think you are being pedantic about it, Walter.  For example, "Beethoven was a musical visionary."  I think lens is fine.
He was not of an age, but for all time.
