Recommend some Chopin/Rach/Liszt?
on: October 30, 2009, 12:30:29 PM
Hi, I'm new here  :)

I was hoping that maybe you could recommend some good Chopin/Rach/Liszt pieces for me to learn.

I finished 8th grade AMEB with a B+ earlier this year, and the last piece my teacher gave me was the G Minor Rach prelude (which was quite a jump I guess).

What sort of pieces can you recommend at this level?

P.S. My teacher has just given me Chopin Polonaise op. 40 no.2 but I don't really like it (although I tend to like pieces more once I begin to learn and understand them). I am interested in Chopin's Revolutionary Etude and op. 25 no. 5 etude however. Would I be able to tackle those pieces or would I be silly in requesting them from my teacher?

Thanks in advance

I don't think that would be too much of a jump... it might take you a little longer as it is a pain to get up to speed... But if it interests you, then go for it.

You could try a Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody... have a listen to No. 6... might be a bit of fun.

Chopin's Nocturne Op. 62 No. 2 should be perfect for you.

I also recommend Liszt's Romance S. 169.

dear snoo:
the opus 10/12 study is a great call, specially because you really want to play it. one remark: don't worry about speed, because it comes naturally. just play with fluence and focus.
best!

Rachmaninoff: Fantasy Pieces op.3, some of the Preludes op.23 and op.32, some of the Etudes-Tableux are managable and the three Nocturnes are very underrated.

Chopin: Have a look at some other Polonaises

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'd also like to ask why is Chopin Etude op. 25 no. 5 only listed as Grade 8 level on this site? Is it actually not that hard because it looks/sounds rather hard to me, especially at speed.

I don't know about grade 8, but the fingerings and motions are repetitive enough that it takes a lot less time to learn than one might think from merely listening to it.
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

The Revolutionary Etude would be nice.  To contrast that, play one of his Nocturnes too.

Rachmaninoff's musical moment No3 is most beautiful and not too difficult to learn.
Try a chopin waltz or maybe on of the easier polonaises.
Rachmaninoff's Barcarolle is really beautiful as is Chopins.
For liszt you could try a leiberstraum Nocturne.

Have you looked at many more of the Rachmaninoff Preludes?  I really love the D major, B minor, and G# minor, and Db major Preludes, and they are all close to the same difficulty level as the G minor prelude.
