Theme and variations
on: November 02, 2009, 10:43:15 PM
I'm looking for pieces of this form to add to my repertoire, so I'm hoping people here can make some suggestions. I have already heard and studied the most familiar works of the form (those of Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, &c.), but I'm looking for other pieces; 'rarities' or works that people generally are not familiar with.

Thanks.

Hey there. If you've got the technique, try Alkan - Le Festin d'Aesop (Op. 39 No 12)

I'm rather fond of the set by Nielsen.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

Kapustin - Variations Op.41

The Rzewski variations are very nice, but the Kapustin variations are not quite my cup of tea.

I assume this is 'Theme with Variations. FS 81, Op. 40. (1917)'?
I found the recording on Spotify.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far.

Also, Boulez is currently working on a large set of Variations for solo piano that may prove to be rather exciting, given the reviews of the first one and the awesome-looking music.  The first is available currently; look for Une page d’éphéméride.

But if you want something a bit more accessible, why not play something by one of our own, illustrious members (not that he would ever admit he's illustrious, of course):

If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.
