Debussy selection help
on: November 04, 2009, 06:23:37 PM
Alright, so I'm trying to put a program together..but am having trouble finding one piece.  I preferably want to play some Debussy, but don't know which one to put in my program.  Here is my program thus far:

Bach-English Suite no. 1 in A Major
Beethoven-Sonata in A Major, op. 2 no. 2
Brahms-Capriccio in g minor, op. 116 no. 3

So any suggestions to round this out would be most appreciated.  Thanks!

I suggest Hommage ŕ Haydn. Or play one or two of his preludes. Les soirs illuminés par l'ardeur du charbon is also very touching.

It depends on whether you want a big piece or just a filler, not to mention how fast you think you can learn something more difficult.  Can you be more specific?
If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

Since it's just four pieces, I figure something along the lines of pretty substantial.  I may ultimately want to use it for my graduate school auditions too.

In that case, you've really only got to choose between Images II and Estampes.  Those are the only major works I'd recommend for both listener and auditions.  Images I and Suite Bergamasque are a bit too... instantly gratifying, if you know what I mean.

Yah, but what an incredible 5 minutes!
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den, der heimlich lauschet.

L'Isle Joyeuse is only five minutes long.
And "Danse - Tarantelle styrienne", is a personal favorite, and one of the few singular/advanced Debussy works I ever managed to pull off in my last recital (along with 5 of Prokofiev's "Visions fugatives"), and 3 Chopin Preludes).

I Like Debussy's Danse! And the Masque is another option. Both I worked diligently at, but never managed to bring my fingers to the front when I discovered in "L'Isle Joyeuse", a work that has been beyond my technique for many years.

If I had a more consummate technique to ride aside my love of the instrument, I might be as instantly critical. (I wish I had such technique!)

...and she disappeared from view while playing the Agatha Christie Fugue...

Danse is an amazing piece too.  Totally forgot about that one; I only heard it recently - I keep replaying the start, and when that melody comes back in octaves... the title doesn't do justice to what that piece has in store for those listening to it  ;)
