Programme help *changed*
on: November 07, 2009, 02:44:57 AM
As part of my second year assignments I have to create 3x 20 minute programmes. The catch (for me at least) is that it can only include one piece written before 1970 and needs one piece written after 2000.
I have done some researching and listening and playing and have put together drafts, but I was wondering if people could suggest things to help me make them up to 20 minutes.
Note: I am not asking for people to do this assignment for me, I am just completely stuck due to the period I have been asked to select from and need pointing in the right direction. I also have to learn and play these things, it is not just programming I am being assessed on.
Anyhow...
Program 1: Theme= Light and Dark (needs a 5/6 min piece that fits the 'Light' theme)
Scriabin- Sonata nr 9
Lachenmann- Clouds in Icy Moonlight
Danielpour- From the Underground
Program 2: Theme= Seasons (5 mins short- need either a 'summery' or 'wintery' piece preferably post 2000- unfortunately I can't combine the two as Debussy and Bax were before 1970)
Takemitsu- Rain Tree Sketch II or Takemitsu- Rain Tree Sketch II
Debussy- L'Isle Joyeuse
Ligeti- Automne a Varsovie Ligeti- Automne a Varsovie
Bax- Winter Waters
Programme 3. Any suggestions for a title? (2/3 minutes short)
Messiaen- Un reflet dans le vent
Takemitsu- Rain Tree Sketch II (in Memoriam Olivier Messiaen)
Knussen- Prayer Bell Sketch (in memory of Toru Takemitsu)
Thank you for any help you can offer: I am particularly interested in anything written after 2000 as so far I have nothing. What do people think of these programmes?
Two other programs (trying to get as many ideas going as possible so I have a wide choice)
Programme 4: Birdsong (needs 4/5 mins)
Liszt- Legend nr 1
Messiaen- Le merle noir and Le rouge gorge from 'Petites esquisse d'Oiseaux'
Programme 5: Japanese Piano Music (may be slightly too long so any suggestions for alternatives welcomed)
Takemitsu- Litany
Ichiyanagi- Piano Poem
Fujikura- Frozen Heat

For program 2 you could do 1 or 2 pieces from Tchaikovsky Seasons. For program 2, Sculthorpe Night pieces but that might be 1 or 2 minutes too long.

Tchaikovsky is too early- I'm only allowed one pre-1970 piece in each program which in that would be either the Debussy or the Bax.
Sculthorpe I would use but I used them in my final exam for year 1 so probably wouldn't go down that well to recycle.
