3 - J. S. Bach's piano transcriptions
on: November 21, 2009, 12:24:51 AM
Being an enthusiastic of the Bach's piano transcriptions genre, I enjoy a lot those marvelous records by Hyperion, and from their collection (7 Vols. so far), I'd like to get these 3 scores to read and play myself:

Bach-Murdoch: Concerto in D Minor BWV 596 (after Vivaldi)
Bach-Friedman: My Heart ever Faithful (from Cantata 68)
Bach-Siloti: Adagio from Sonata for Violin and Keyboard in F minor BWV 1018

Hard to decide which one is more beautiful. Thanks a lot in advance.

These have been floating around the web for so long, i guess they are all OK.

Indeed the Hyperion series is superb. I have always personally preferred bach in transcription.

Poor Bach! I somehow don't see you singing from the same cantata sheet as Gep on this one...

Not a word that I've ever encountered in the texts Bach set in any of his cantatas...

There are, however, many splendid transcriptions of Bach (as well as some mediocre ones and some awful ones); three fine ones that occur to me but which are even now all too rarely played are of unaccompanied violin partitas, by Godowsky.

Fine works indeed, but i have always preferred the transcriptions of Friedman, Tausig and Stradal myself.

Friedman and Tausig, indeed - but Stradal? Far too many of his just seem vastly inflated, to me. Godowsky's are more subtle and refined than all those three put together, I think - and, like his vast series of studies on the études of Chopin, really do seem like inspired commentaries on the transcribed composer as well as new compositions in their own right. On top of that, they are an absolute joy for the pianist to play, notwithstanding their considerable challenges.

Sure - but this probably proves little or nothing beyond the apparent fact that you and I may have different views of what constitutes inflation (but let's not explore the possible rationale behind that in any detail!)...
