Anyone here ever play any Dutilleux?
on: November 22, 2009, 05:41:09 AM
I have a couple of CDs of Henri Dutilleux works. One is mainly ensemble works and the other is all piano (mostly solo + "Figures De Resonances" for 2 pianos). I'm just curious how familiar the local crowd is with these interesting, but so for for me, not well known pieces of 20th century French music. In all the hundreds of concerts I attended I can't recall any specific work ever being presented, although it is likely that one or two chamber works may have been performed.

The Piano Sonata, one of his earliest works from the 1940s, is a very widely performed piece and I have known many people who have played it in concert. It is no surprise, for the language is conservative compared to much of his other music. On the rare occasion that some of his mature music makes it to the stage, his 3 Preludes (some of his most recent music) get some fame. I would much like to play either the Preludes or the Piano Sonata (the sonata is very difficult though).

I performed the the Piano Sonata thrice in 2004. It is fantastic, somehow reminding me of certain French organ music...but oh, it was not easy to memorize. I unfortunately didn't make it through one of those performances without slips of that sort. I should have another crack at it in the future under a more lenient deadline.

Well, with these recommendations, I will take more time to get to know the Sonata, and Preludes if I find them.

Thanks.

I remember giving up on the Dutilleux Sonata a few years back after making it to the Sonata at half the tempo.  But the previous posts and thinking of the first time i heard it being performed has rekindled my interest for this work.
