Opus 42 n° 2 Scriabin - Discrepancy "variance" LH-RH
on: November 25, 2009, 11:06:20 AM
I shamelessly dare to ask for free advice here, in this section.
Got a crush on Etude Opus 42 n° 2 - Scriabin…
Now except the fact that there is a furtive, floating zing to this piece, it is for me the first time that I have to deal with a “discrepancy” (I like, as you can notice, difficult words but I’m not sure it’s the right word), a “gap” between what the left hand tells and the right hand.   I can deal with some Chopin nocturnes where there is obvious difference in "story-telling" between left and right.   But in this Etude there is something "more than this 'Chopin'-difference", isn’t it (?), there’s definitely something new for me ; a difference in 'freedom'.   Till now I could “easily” find out where the notes of the right hand should match with those of the left hand.   The score is generally nicely outshaped that way ; notes of the right hand bar appear vertically exactly above those of the left hand in order to know how to play ‘rhytmically’ together.  Shoo... I’m not sure I’m making myself understandable.
Now, till now, I’m studying seriously hands separated.   That’s a first thing.   And secondly, I play and will play hands together very slowly.   Though I have the feeling that it is not evoluating nicely, that I’m maybe not learning it properly, or that this piece maybe is too difficult for me, that I skipped some kind of exercise that could be helpful.  Till now I spent like 45 minutes on this Etude and I have the feeling I'm getting nowhere ! Is it just a matter of continuing studying hands separated, and hands together slowly, and persevering till perfection, and one day everything will become how it should be.   Is it just that for “full freedom” of both hands I just need to study this piece very intensively.   Is it normal that I have the feeling that it will take more time and focus and concentration during the studying than let's say a nocturne of Chopin.
Thanks a lot for reading.   Any tips, experiences, thoughts on this Etudes ?

Don't waste your time doing hands seperate. You must do this hands together and phrase at a time. I would suggest practicing it half tempo, don't speed it up until you can play it beautifully at that tempo. You can visualise the 5 note groups in the Lh as groups of (212 or 23) it may help notice how the RH fits in with it. This is not too difficult to put together if you understand the several ways in which the notes fit in with each other, also put that into context with a phrase of music at a time. There is not many variations in how the notes work together so solve the few that are there and notice when they repeat themselves.
