Topic: Black Grand Piano by Schylling Good or Bad start for a child?  (Read 1036 times)

Hi,
As a parent of very young children, I have noticed the keen interest of my 3 and 1/2 year old in piano. Like many other parent I want to encourage her but have a very limited budget and wish to be sure of her interest before we move to the next step financially. Can anyone tell me if a "Black Grand Piano by Schylling" which is more a toy, I know, than a piano is something good enough for her to start let's say for a few months until we can get her something better? Or she is better off with nothing at all until next year? Thank you for your input!

Best thing for your child at this time is a good teacher.  Get one that has knowledge teaching very young children (you don't teach a 3 1/2 yr old like an 8 yr old).  Teacher can advise you on purchase of an instrument. 


Since budget is an issue your $179 for that "Black Grand Piano by Schylling" could be put to something more beneficial for your child, and a lot more functional too.  I would go with full sized keys right away.  Consider a digital piano, and do not overlook second hand units.  Some good deals can be had.

You are absolutely right, the Black Grand Piano by Schylling is a toy and just a toy. But will the  Black Grand Piano be the optimal vehicle to encourage a three year old to want to learn music and continue into piano lessons? Quantum is right in that you can get much more for your money with a home digital piano. But you are dealing with a three year old here and it could be that this toy is better to capture and hold the child's attention.

Thank you both as you have perfectly summed up my dilemma. I have decided to invest in lessons rather than the "toy" and then follow the teacher's advice on a second hand instrument. Best to you.
