[video] Need your advice on how to improve
on: November 29, 2009, 06:15:50 PM
Hello!

This is my first post at this forum  :)
I am a piano beginner, and have been playing piano for around 3 months.

This piano piece inspired me to start playing, and I it was also the first composition that I learned.

And this is me playing it:

I would be happy to know if there is anything to improve (which I am sure there is) :)

Well, it kinda looks like youre trying to kill the piano, if you look at the youtube video you can see youre really 'hammering' those fingers of yours on the piano. You really have to learn to relax your hand and fingers, else youre gonna get injuries (seriously).

Also try to do something about dynamics. Now it all sounds like fortefortissimo, wich makes it abit boring (maybe even annoying) to listen to. You have to remember that a piece always 'goes somewhere', so start abit softer, and work to the point where you think the climax in this piece is.

I think if you could show us a video of you playing a normal piece, we can advice you abit more about technique ;)

When I start to feel more confident playing this composition, I can start think more about the dynamics and so on.. :)

Arent a piano supposed to be able to 'take' hard playing? :D

One of the most important ways to be able to play more difficult works is to get your arm and wrist to relax and not to be stiff

Try when you first sit down at the piano, play Just C-D-E-F-G-F-G-E-D and repeat. Do it very slowly, and first hit C, Don't think about going to the next note yet; make sure you're wrist and arm are very relaxed, then move on to D, and do this also when you play scales. And when you push the notes down, just use your fingers, try not to push with you're arms, but later you will need to use the weight of your arms to get more forte and more tone.

I will definitly try that. Can you see if there is any forte in this piece from the sheet provided?

It is nearly all forte i think, if there is a 'F' there it means forte.

Your getting the notes which is good, but its all the same volume, far too heavy, even for forte there can be a bit of room for the harshness of how you hit the keys. Try forte without slamming on the keys.

But your doing well up to now just keep practiceing and get some better recording stuff :)
