The Norbert Burgmuller and Otto Nicolai have always appealed to my eary romantic attuned brainwaves. Paderewski and Balakirev also wrote impressive sonatas IMO.

Once spent a few hours on the Dreyschock sonata, but my forearms gave up.

Amazingly, the Thalberg sonata has never rung my bell.

Seriously, I think you and weissenberg2 are the same person sometimes, or are brothers or something (don't you two have the same last name anyways?).

I'd almost agree, except I DO like the First and Fourth Scriabin sonatas :P, although the second one trumps any of the others by a long shot.

Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Imbetter and I are not the same person nor do we have a blood relation (not that I know that is)

I refuse to believe that, for you both have the same last name (or at least I can guess that from your emails and from what imbetter told me his name was), you both agree on many subjects, and you have many of the same favorite pianists? Coincidence? I think not.

It is not impossible for us to have the same last names, and we like some of the same music, and being related would not at all influence music taste (or not by that much).

And you don't have to believe me, nor can I fully prove it to you.

I love the  Khachaturian sonata, but i dont think you can class that as romantic or even late romantic, Rachmaninoffs first piano sonata in not very well known, (I have no idea why), But it is most enchanting, Though it is vert technically difficult, and as all Rachmaninoff Pieces are they require a lot of Brain work and a lot of Passion.

Good luck.

All Schubert's late sonatas: D958, D959 & D960. I saw Radu Lupu & Lang Lang perform these sonatas this year :D

Liszt's Sonata in B minor: I just love this monumental sonata.

Rachmaninov Sonata nr.2 op. 36 in b minor: Great adventure story.

I am able to play the D960 sonata (1st & 3rd movements now) and I could only dreaming of Liszt's Sonata..
