New Piece recommendations
on: December 05, 2009, 03:39:43 AM
I'm 16 and I'm into classical piano, but I'm looking for a new piece to learn that's somewhat challenging but not way above my level.  I really like composers like Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Ravel because they have really interesting sounding music, but a lot of their pieces are insanely difficult. What kind of classical pieces from those composers are around my level that are good to learn and fun to listen to?  A few pieces I am learning (around my level), I'm learning the first 3 movements of Beethoven's 7th Sonata.  I just really want to add something new to my small repertoire.
Currently Learning:
Mozart Sonata in D Major K. 284
Chopin Etude Op. 25 No. 1 "Aeolian Harp"
Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 1 in F# minor, Op. 1

If you like Prokofiev I could recommend trying some of his Visions Fugitives. Very cool pieces that are short and not overly difficult.

I second the Prokofiev Visions Fugitives. I've worked on 1, 4, 8, 10, and 14, so I can't say much about the others (though I'm about to start 19 and 20). If you like fast, difficult pieces, I would especially recommend 14, and no. 8 for a slow one. You may also consider trying something from his set of pieces op. 12 (I think the most popular are the Prelude and the Scherzo). For Rachmaninoff, maybe one of his preludes (op. 23 or op. 32)? The popular ones are op. 23 nos. 4-7 and op. 32 no. 10 and 12. These are all very beautiful, but you may want to try something different. My personal "underplayed" favorite at the moment is op. 32 no. 3. Beethoven's 7th sonata is fairly difficult, so if you're comfortable with that, it opens up a fair amount of choice to you, though if you're not used to these composers' idioms, it may be good to start with something short. Another composer you may like is Scriabin, maybe not something late, but his preludes op. 11 or poemes op. 32 are a good place to start.
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

Rachmaninov Prelude Op. 23 No. 5 or the overplayed Op. 3 No. 2 In C Sharp Minor which is still very useful to learn for the developing pianist. Ravel, try Sonatine, Pavane pour une infante défunte, or his Hommage to Haydn. Prokofiev Etude Op 2 :P
