help a beginner who would like to learn piano.
on: December 15, 2009, 02:04:31 AM
i have a keyboard. i would like to learn to play piano. i learned to play a couple songs. 3 by coldplay. i forget the names. viva la vida, scientists, and another. and also a a few zelda riffs. i learned by watching youtube videos.

i know notes a,b,c,d,e,f,g. i think it would be best if i learned how to play tabs. i tried learning before, but i had no clue what i was looking at. so i just gave up.

so new poster here.

what should i learn first? tabs? i can play pretty good already ive been playing guitar for 5 years not seriously but ive not bad. i wanted to excell at guitar but couldnt cause spraining my pinky and ring finger has caused it to lock up when playing so it makes it difficult to play fast or strong. i know some basic chords on piano i guess?

should i spend time learning tabs? or just keep on going on youtube on how to play songs. i dont really want to learn sheet music but i guess its a given if i want to be good at piano.

thanks for the help. ill make cliffs since this is pretty long.

-beginner wants to play piano, use to play guitar.
- can stretch fingers good on piano not much trouble hitting a few chords that i know.
- wants to know what he should work on to improve his piano skills. as a begginner.
- can play a few cold play songs, and zelda riffs already.

thanks.

Tabs are more for guitar.  If you want to play sheet music on piano, you will need to learn how to read notes on a staff.  There is no getting around it.

Some basic things you can do as a beginner is start learning scales and chords on the piano.  Melodies and accompaniments are made up of these, so you will have an easier time recognizing them in pieces if you learn them first.  If you have a chord book for guitar don't try using it on piano as there are differences.  Get a piano technique book that lists scales, triads, chords, etc.

Best thing to do is get a teacher.  You will learn faster, and a good teacher can point out bad habits and elements of your playing that may cause you injury.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

learnpianoonline.com has been a great experience for me to learn how to play the piano. I am an adult learner and have never had lessons. From there I guess you can decide if you want to get a live teacher or not, personally I am satisfied with the results and prefer to make my mistakes privately without live criticism. I guess it just depends on what level you want to take it to, but from what I've read on these boards, upper level pianists are very hard on themselves no matter how good they get! I don't need that pressure!
