The hardest competition I have EVER SEEN

Take a look at this Liszt competition:

You could prepare for a lifetime and still never play the required pieces..I bet only Leslie Howard types are allowed.

Quarter Final II. (approx. 30 min)

A compulsory work by Liszt, of which the score will be sent to competitors, one month before the start of the competition

To hell with that...

I wonder what kind of work they would send to you-- Ill be damned if they send me a book of Paganini etudes, with a note on the front- "You will be required to play these pieces in concert in one month...er...sorry it took so long, therefore I mean 20 days.  Have fun".

I wonder what kind of people compete in these competitions.  You need to have a huge repertoire of some of the worlds most difficult works, maintain it for a long period, and rush to learn yet another one in a month.  On top of that, you need to play a whole concerto! DAMN!!  I feel sick just thinking about it...

The top prized is only worth $16,000 CDN? what a waste of time.  If it was for that bosendorfer, then perhaps it'd catch the attention, but for only $16,000, plus there is no guarantee you'll win...more like a guarantee you'll lose  >:(

Imagine this was the minimum performance requirements for a university student wishing to earn a doctoral degree.  :o

Well... I'll tell you... people who even enter that competition, know what they are getting themselves into... and are possibly true "Professionals". Now to non-professional pianists... this work may seem impossible. But some people make learning music of Liszt their life... And have built the habit of learning very difficult things at such a level... or have already played the piece before, and simply have to relearn it...not very simple actually!!

Take the "Olympics" for example... many competing from around the world... doing things no other human can do. Sprinting, jumping at heights no other can match...

Competitions like these are ment for the very best...

WOW talk about learning a mass of repertoire. i think i'll leave that to the professionals...

just listening to people talk about the sydney international piano comp- it's such a nice competition, you only get one sort of set work in each session (first round you get to perform twice) and then fill up the rest of your performance time with pieces of your own choice, so there's a nice range of composers (though Liszt's Mephisto Waltz is very popular). ie. you should all come to sydney in 2008 and do it! and all the people are really nice. oh i'll just make this post a bit more propoganda for it- you can listen to it online via www.sipca.com.au the pianists are amazing!
